Ashley!!!

Her career in veterinary medicine started in Florida, where she had the opportunity to work with all kinds of animals and quickly discovered that caring for them was more than just a career—it was her calling. Since then, she'd continued to grow as a veterinary assistant, gaining experience caring for animals in need and helping both pets and their families through some of life’s most difficult moments.
Outside of her veterinary work, she is passionate about volunteering with animal rescues and shelters, which is where her passion started at a young age. This is where she can give her time and heart to animals who are still waiting for their forever homes and need the extra love and attention that they all deserve.
Every animal has a story, and she's grateful that her career allows her to be a small part of so many of them. From the healthy and happy to the scared, sick, and forgotten, she believes every animal deserves patience, compassion, and a second chance.
Animal care isn’t just what she does—it’s a huge part of who she is.

We love ya, Ashley!

Leah's turn!!
Her love for animals started when she was about 10 or 11. Her family somehow ended up with a flying squirrel and she fell in love with wildlife. After that, she visited the library and got all kinds of animal books. She was so serious, she sent zoos letters asking how she could work with animals one day. A few of them wrote back and suggested that she try volunteering with a local zoo. Shortly after, she started volunteering at the Nature Center in Kinston, NC for years until she was old enough to turn it into a job.
Her parents were cool enough to let her rehab baby possums, squirrels, and birds at home until they could be released back into the wild. That was a really unique experience, but as she got older, she shifted gears a little.
She started her vet assisting career in 2006 and she has been working with Dr. Austin since 2012.
She reports: "My first week working with her, I cried "happy tears" for having finally gotten the privilege to work for a vet that cares for animals in the way you would suspect that all vets should. I knew that day that I had found the boss I wanted to have, and it still stands true to this day. All the vets there are amazing in their own unique ways and I am honored to be able to work with each of them. My co-workers are like family and so many clients and patients are like family."

Her favorite things to do at work are dental prophys with Dr. Sam and Dr. Nowlan, nail trims and handling "spicy" cats... and joking around with the crew of course. 😀
We love our Leah!!

This is Kelley, our wonderful office manager, and here is her "why"!

She was born an animal lover, and not just mammals, but reptiles and birds too. Her parents let her bring just about everything home. She grew up surrounded by cows, pigs, chickens, horses, dogs, and cats and helped care for every one of them.

Some fond memories for her are: She once brought home four puppies she found in their cornfield. She even brought home a baby copperhead—unbeknownst to her father 😵‍💫.

From domestic animals to wildlife, she knew this was her calling. While her body has started to give up on her, her passion certinaly never has. Caring for animals has never been just a job—it has always been a purpose.

She is grateful every day to have the opportunity to work alongside such an amazing group of compassionate, dedicated individuals. She says it has been an honor to share this journey with people who understand what it means to devote your heart to the care of animals.

We may be a little biased, but we really do think we have the best staff! We'd like to start highlighting a staff member a week to show you the WHY behind how our wonderful staff ended up in the veterinary profession.

First up: Erica, one of our RVTs!
Erica knew from a very young age that she loved animals, but as she got older that love grew into a passion. She never had to face anything alone because she always had the unconditional love of a pet (or dozens) with her. That unconditional love inspired her to become a voice for those who couldn't speak for themselves. That paired with her acquired love for science, math and problem solving led her straight into the veterinary field. While in veterinary medicine she also found a love for teaching and sharing her knowledge. She will always hold a passion for the misunderstood and will always have a soft spot for exotics and of course greyhounds. Her true love in vet med is emergency and critical care 💙
Fun childhood fact: her greyhound, Jasmine, taught her how to walk up steps 🤣 Jasmine also taught her patience, love, strength and truly started her love for animals.
