****THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH - WE HAVE MET OUR GOAL****
Over the last couple of weeks we have been working on finding a safe place for one of our pet families to live after being displaced by a home owner experiencing foreclosure. Mr. L. was informed, with no notice, that he and his pet had to leave that same day.

While promoting an event, we saw Mr. L out with his dog and he shared his story. We've know this pet family for several years so we went to work making some calls and thankfully with the help of some of our community partners we have found a room for this pet family to rent, meals and utilities included. After a couple weeks, we've been able to advocate for this family and get him adjusted in his new home with some new clothes, new insurance, a phone and some additional assistance for Mr. L and his pup, P. We were also able to get his pup cleaned up and groomed to make sure he was welcome in the new home.

We are still in need of some help for this client. He is on disability and while he is able to cover his rent moving forward, he is still short for security deposit and first two weeks rent (last two weeks of May). We've been able to collect $200, but we are still trying to raise another $500.

Please help if you can! We understand everyone is being pulled on, but this support will go a long way in making sure this family stays safe and well.

With gratitude,
Charm City Companions

Dear Charm City and Beyond...

It's with a heavy heart we share the passing of our incredible friend and board member, Maria Saucedo. Maria lost a tough battle to cancer on Oct 22, 2024 at the young age of 44.

Maria was a bright light and will be missed by so many. She was a quiet trailblazer, responsible for managing a national database for The Pets for Life program, increasing access to care for hundreds of thousands of pets across the country. She has made a bigger impact than she ever knew and will continue to imprint on our work moving forward indefinitely.

Thank you for your influence, brilliance and love, Maria. You'll be loved and truly missed forever!

Hey dog and cat owners!

Are your pets vaccines UTD? Are you sure? LOL That's what they all say! It's not on your vet to remind you, so please check... and if not, here is a great low-cost resource offered by our local BARCS Animal Shelter

Friends, family and colleagues!

Need your help! We have 100s of animals in Baltimore City that need spay/neuter services. We have the funding to get it done! We have the veterinarians, vet techs and other essential volunteers ready to help. But, we need a space once a month. Even just for one month to due a test run. This is a free service to pet families living in under-resourced neighborhoods in Baltimore City.

This is more important than ever. The shelters are OVER full and booked for spay neuter. BARCS currently has a pause on public spay day. We really need other options in Charm City.

To be clear, do you have any space or ideas where we could get free space one day a month to do spay/neuter surgeries? In and out between 7a - 4p. We can carry the insurance as well!

SPECS:
💜 1,000-1,500sqft. (For those familiar, think of the total area of the surgery/prep/recovery area at BARCS.)

💜 A small warehouse with good ventilation, lighting, sink to wash instruments, and a bathroom would be adequate.

💜 Off street parking a plus, but not absolute.

💜 Available one day a month or every two months.

Thank you for your time and thoughts!

At BARCS, we have a staff messaging app. One of the groups is called “Daily Rounds & Space” where we assess how many kennels we have open, how many animals were brought in overnight by Animal Control, approximately how many more are on their way in, how many surrender appointments we have–and ultimately, how are we going to get through the day.

Today’s chat:

Our veterinarians weigh in first: “We currently have 10 dogs in intake and only 1 open kennel.”

More dogs come in. It’s barely 9:00AM.

Now our Animal Care Manager updates: “We are now -15 kennels.”

We get an update from Animal Control.

At 2:00PM, from our Director of Operations: “We are now -23 kennels.”

And most recently: “Another 3 dogs on their way plus 11 cats.”

We didn’t know today would unfold like this. As Baltimore’s open-admission shelter, with an operating agreement with Baltimore City Animal Control, our days are often unpredictable. Sadly, today is no exception. At the time of this posting, many hours remain, and more animals will likely be arriving at our doors.

Fridays are typically busy for adoptions, and we’re hopeful that the crowd will help us open 26 kennels–at least. We urgently need people to come down tonight and throughout the weekend to adopt or foster. Every adoption makes a difference.
Tomorrow morning, our staff will share updates in the “Daily Rounds & Space” chat. While we can never predict what each day will bring, we hope the news will be about how many kennels are open rather than how many negative spaces we have.

To our loyal supporters: we know that hearing about our constant space crisis is taxing. It’s heartbreaking and exhausting, and we understand how difficult it must be to read these messages again and again. Yet, even in the face of this seemingly never-ending struggle, you continue to stand by us, showing up when we need you the most (which is literally every single day).

BARCS simply can’t do this without you. While today’s situation is, unfortunately, not unique, neither is the incredible support we receive from this community. Every day, you help us navigate overwhelming challenges, and your unwavering commitment gives us hope. You’ve stood with us through this incredibly difficult year, and we are endlessly grateful for your compassion and support every step of the way.

Our Story

Charm City Companions is a non-profit organization dedicated to community outreach and pet wellness in Baltimore City. Modeled after The HSUS Pets for Life program, we work to extend animal welfare resources, services, and information to pet owners living in under-served neighborhoods. We believe in approaching everyone with respect, accepting that most people love their pets and consider them family members, regardless of socioeconomic status or variations in culture. Through this non-judgmental method, we help elevate the human-animal bond and foster healthy relationships between people and their pets. By improving the relationship between a person and his or her pet, we help to improve the quality of life for both by increasing the chances of the pet staying in the home permanently. This approach is effective because it embraces the human component of the companion animal equation, meeting people where they are and establishing trust, creating a ripple effect in the community for long-term impact.
