🌟 Dog Spotlight: Poochyena 🌟

Meet Poochyena 🩷
ID #594168 | Estimated 4–5 years old | Pit Bull | ~60 lbs | Female

Poochyena is an affectionate, playful girl with a big heart and a serious love for fun. She enjoys getting out for walks, active playtime, and adventures, but once she’s had her zoomies and wiggles out, she is happy to settle down, relax, and soak up love from her people. 💕

One of Poochyena’s favorite things? Water! 🌊
This girl absolutely loves pool time and turns into a little land seal the second she gets the chance to splash around. She is a true water dog at heart and would be thrilled to have a family who appreciates her pool-party personality.

Behavior Notes:

🐶 Good with other dogs
🎓 Knows “sit”
🏡 Housetrained
💞 Loves pets and attention
💦 Loves water and pool time

Medical:

✔️ Up to date on Bordetella, Distemper, and Rabies vaccinations

Poochyena does prefer being out of her kennel, as the shelter environment can make her stressed and overly excited. Once she is outside and able to relax, her happy, loving personality shines through. She is a wonderful dog who just wants comfort, affection, activity, and a family to call her own.

🐾 Studley Store Community Event Success! 🐾

We had an incredible day out at Studley General Store in Mechanicsville and loved getting the opportunity to connect with so many members of our community 🎉🐶
A huge thank you to our friends at The Lucky Paw Foundation for inviting us to be part of this wonderful event and for generously sponsoring the adoption fees for our dogs attending. Because of their support and the kindness of our community, 3 of the 4 dogs we brought with us found their forever homes 💕🏠

Events like these mean so much to us. They give our shelter dogs a chance to get out, meet people, soak up attention, and hopefully catch the eye of the perfect family. Watching these pups leave with new beginnings is what it’s all about ❤️

We also want to thank Studley General Store for hosting such a fun and welcoming event, everyone who came out to support and adopt, and of course, the amazing adopters who opened their hearts and homes to these deserving dogs 🐾

🐾 Adopt Joy Was a HIT! 🐾
Our very first Adopt Joy event at PetSmart Mechanicsville was one for the books! 🎉
Not only did we get out into the community and share what we do, but TWO of the THREE dogs who joined us found their forever homes 💕🐶
Moments like this matter. For many of our shelter pets, events like these are their chance to be seen outside of the kennel — to meet people, make connections, and finally get their shot at a home instead of watching the world pass by.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this possible — from our community supporters to the amazing team members who showed up and made it happen. You all played a part in changing lives ❤️

🌟 Dog Spotlight: Ziggy 🌟

Meet Ziggy 💙
ID #593809 | 1 year old | Rottweiler Mix | ~50 lbs | Male

Ziggy is a young, energetic boy with a big personality and lots of potential. He has been in shelter care since September and came to us in January through our rescue partners to help give him a better chance at finding the right placement.

Ziggy is playful, affectionate, confident, and loves staying active. He enjoys walks around Ashland, time in the open field, belly rubs, and plenty of attention from his people. He does know “sit,” but will need continued basic training, structure, and consistency to help him be his best boy.

Because Ziggy can get mouthy/nippy when excited, he would do best in an active home with no young children and adopters who can provide daily exercise, enrichment, and guidance.

Behavior Notes:

🚨 Temporary Intake Adjustment 🚨
Out of an abundance of caution, Hanover County Animal Protection & Shelter is implementing a temporary disruption to immediate intake services while we address a potential illness concern within the shelter.
🐾 What this means:
• Immediate owner surrenders are temporarily paused
• A waiting list for surrenders is currently in place
• Enhanced cleaning, monitoring, and precautionary protocols are actively underway
🐾 Why we’re doing this:
In a shelter environment, even the possibility of illness requires swift action. Taking these steps now helps us protect the health of the animals currently in our care as well as those who may come in next.
🐾 Next steps:
If you need to surrender a pet, please contact our team to be added to the waiting list. We will resume normal intake operations as soon as next week.

🐾✨ We’ve had some extra helping hands at the shelter lately… and our dogs are definitely not complaining!

A local group has been spending time walking dogs, giving them enrichment, and capturing some really great photos and videos of our adoptable pups in action 📸🐶

We wanted to share a few of the moments they’ve captured so you can see our dogs outside of the kennel environment, getting fresh air, stretching their legs, and showing off their personalities 💕

This week, for Animal Control Appreciation Week, we’re also shining a light on the heart of our department—our shelter staff. The ones behind the scenes who step in when animals are at their most vulnerable… sometimes just hours old, eyes barely open, fighting for a chance.
Like this little one.
Every feeding, every chance, every moment of patience and care—this is what saving lives really looks like. It’s not always easy. It’s not always pretty. It’s often exhausting, emotional, and demanding. But our staff shows up anyway.
Day after day.
They handle medical emergencies. They comfort the scared and the broken. They work tirelessly to find resources, homes, and second chances. They see hope where others might see something less. They go above and beyond—staying late, coming in early, attending events—because the animals in their care aren’t just a job… they’re a responsibility they carry with pride.
They are the foundation of everything we do.
So, this week, we also say thank you—to the hands that feed, the hearts that never quit, and the people who make miracles happen every single day.
