Please Be Aware - SCAM TARGETING PET OWNERS
⚠️
Scammers contact people missing pets with a false story about their pet’s health and status, often claiming the pet has been brought to a veterinary care facility with critical injuries. The scammers then demand a “deposit” to begin emergency veterinary care. Victims will show up to the care facilities looking for their pet and realize they have been scammed.

How to Spot the Scam – What to Do:
• Verify information with the caller - If the caller claims to represent a local VCA (or other) hospital or to have found your pet, ask for detailed information about your pet that only someone presently with the animal would know (gender, color, pattern, identifying characteristics, etc.) You might try asking something that isn’t true, like “his tail is docked” and if they say yes, you know it is not your pet.
• Contact the hospital directly - If the caller claims to represent a VCA (or other) hospital, hang up and then contact the hospital directly to verify if they have the pet. Do not use a phone number the caller gives you, look it up independently.
• DO NOT give any personal information, or make any payments over the phone. Say you will head down and handle things in person.
• Scammers will pressure you to provide information or make a payment. They will scare you into taking action by saying things like “your pet may die”, etc.
• If the call sounds suspicious, it probably is.

If you are affected by this scam:
• Pet owners should report the incident to the local police department. They can also report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission: 1-877-382-4357 and ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
• Inform the VCA (or other) hospital that someone was misrepresenting them as part of a scam.
