You may have heard screwworm has made it to New Mexico officially with a dog in Lea county confirmed to be infected.
➡️Be informed and alert but not panicked.
Screwworms are flies whose larva feed on warm-blooded mammals. They can cause serious injury and death in animals.
➡️Unlike typical maggots that feed on necrotic tissue, screwworms feed on living tissue, creating wounds, infection, and pain.
➡️Check pets regularly for new wounds.
Clean and protect wounds immediately.
➡️Watch for: wounds that don’t heal, visible maggots, pets licking or biting at wounds, discharge/odor from wounds.
➡️Consider ways to keep flies away from pets/ pet areas including picking up waste, keeping garbage sealed, and using fly traps.
➡️Keep pets away from livestock.

Congratulations to our very own Dr Elizabeth Berry!! Now she is off to Oregon State University for her small animal rotating internship. Dr Berry would like to focus on feline and exotic medicine with an emphasis in dentistry!
