Route 66 Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center

Route 66 Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center Route 66 Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center is a family owned Vet ER in Nob Hill. Finally, a Emergency Veterinary Hospital for SE Albuquerque!
(269)

Route 66 was once the gateway to the western United States. Developed as part of the early national highway system the roadway first provided hope and inspiration as the pathway west for families looking for new oppurtunities during the times of the Dust Bowl and World War II. It soon became the path for adventure seekers looking west in the 1950s and 1960s. Invoking a sense of promise and adventu

re Rt. 66 became intertwined with the growth and development of the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is this same promise of opportunity and adventure that has led to the creation of the Route 66 Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Center. Recognizing the desperate need for high quality emergency veterinary care in southeast Albuquerque and desiring to operate our own hospital, Route 66 Veterinary Emergency Critical Care center has been founded by Dr. Jeremy Welcome and Rowan McGehee-Welcome. Located along historic Route 66 in the rapidly growing Nob Hill neighborhood we will create the premier veterinary trauma center in Albuquerque. With a focus on compassionate care and exceptional client service while practicing the highest quality of medicine we will initially provide after hours and critical patient care for the pets of southeast Albuquerque and beyond. Through our mission to create positive change in people’s lives we will integrate ourselves into the Nob Hill community, continually striving to serve in new and expansive ways.

✨Meet Dr. White✨

Hi everyone! I’m Dr. Kristen White.

I was born and raised right here in Albuquerque. After spending some time up in Oregon for veterinary school, I decided to come back home and I couldn’t be happier to be here!

🩺💚I’m so grateful to be part of the amazing Route 66 team. Every day, I get to work alongside an incredible team of compassionate veterinarians and technicians who share my passion for helping pets and supporting families during their most stressful moments.

Outside of the hospital, I love spending time with my husband, Jack, and our three dogs, playing board games, snowboarding, and heading to the lake whenever I can.

Although I love all dogs and cats, senior Chihuahuas will always have a special place in my heart! 🐾💖

💫Meet Dr. Fiehtner💫

I was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, and after spending a few years in southern Utah for my undergraduate studies, I returned home to earn my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of Arizona.

🐾🩺I joined the Route 66 team just over a year ago, deciding this was the perfect place to start my career after completing a rewarding externship here during my final year of veterinary school.

🐢I have a special fondness for exotic animals, especially guinea pigs and tortoises, and my favorite emergency cases are rattlesnake envenomations as they often respond quickly and can have such positive outcomes.

🐴🩷Although I originally planned to pursue equine medicine, I now get my horse fix by training my own two horses, Lucia and Valentina. When I’m not at work or with my horses, I love spending time with my husband and our four dogs!

Have a safe and Happy Halloween from the Rt66 team! 🎃🐾

✨Meet Dr. Guido✨

I'm originally from Las Vegas, NV and have a strong passion for emergency veterinary medicine—I'm drawn to the fast-paced environment, the challenge of thinking on my feet, and the opportunity to make a real difference in critical moments. I went to vet school at the University of Missouri (Mizzou). Outside of vet med, I love spending time with my little zoo at home: two chinchillas, a red-eared slider, and two cats. When I'm not caring for animals, you'll probably find me out on a hiking trail, exploring the outdoors and recharging in nature. 🐾

🐾Meet Dr. Peterson🐾

Hi! I’m Breck but your dogs and cats probably know me as Dr. Peterson.

🌄I live in Albuquerque with my boyfriend Kevin, cat Frisco, and dog Tucker. Before moving here, I’ve lived in 3 different continents, and have visited 2 more. My favorite part about living in Albuquerque is exploring new places to eat. Plus, I am only a few hours away from my parents and grandparents in the mountains of northern New Mexico where I love to spend my weekends.

🐶🧡A fun fact about my dog Tucker is that he has a permanent feeding tube due to a chronic medical condition. Since getting his feeding tube, he has never been happier, or healthier!

🎨In my free time I like to do all sorts of arts and crafts, from painting and sewing to mosaics and woodworking.

🩺While I have many memorable cases from my time at Route 66 so far, the best part must be the people I get to work with. From the technicians to the front desk staff, everyone here is committed to working together with a common goal of providing the best care for animals. We often meet owners, and their pets, on the unexpectedly worst days of their lives so everything we do has a chance to make a difference.

⭐️Meet Dr. Woo⭐️

Hello! I'm Dr. Gabby Woo, originally from Toronto, Canada, and trained in upstate New York. I worked in mixed animal practice and shelter medicine before moving to New Mexico 3 years ago and switching my focus to emergency medicine.

🐾 As an emergency veterinarian, I have the immense privilege of guiding our clients through tough medical decisions, and being present for both sad and joyful moments with their best friends. While I like the challenge of critical cases and learning new clinical skills, it is ultimately the clients I meet and the team I work with that makes my job fulfilling. Route 66's staff and doctors are incredibly talented, creative and empathetic, and I feel fortunate to be a part of this special workplace.

🩺 My favorite surgery is gastrointestinal foreign body removal (gastrotomy/enterotomy/resection and anastamosis) - it's always a surprise to see what your pet ate! I also enjoy long term wound management because, while these cases require patience and dedication from both clients and clinicians, the results can be incredibly rewarding.

🌄 I love running on the mountain with my dog, Sam, and exploring trails with my cat, Corrie, and my husband David. Other hobbies include practicing yoga, swimming and weightlifting, reading and painting, and cooking new dishes!

💙 My most recent memorable case has got to be Ivy, a sassy young cattle dog mix with acute collapse whose heart/lungs stopped TWICE before being transferred to us for one-on-one neurologic monitoring and intensive nursing care. Amazingly, she went home able to eat, stand and walk (with some wobbles) on her own!

🐾Meet Dr. Calo🐾

Hi, my name is Dr. Grace Calo. I’m originally from Long Island, NY, and now share my home in Albuquerque with my husband and our adopted pets ( three cats, and two dogs).

🐶🐱Fun fact: two of our pets are each missing their left eye!

🧡I love being an emergency veterinarian because it allows me to be there for pets and their families in some of their most difficult and vulnerable moments. Helping a sick/injured pet feel better, and seeing the relief that brings to their family, is the most meaningful part of what I do. Even in stressful situations, it’s rewarding to provide comfort, guidance, and care when people need it most.

🧤😷My favorite emergency surgery is treating GDV—often called “bloat.” It is an incredibly rewarding surgery because patients often go from being critically ill to feeling so much better once the problem is corrected.

🐠👩‍🍳 🏋️‍♀️ Outside of work, I love spending time with my friends and family, baking sourdough bread, aquascaping fish tanks, and lifting weights.

✨Meet Dr. Sam Hart our Interim Medical Director✨

Hello! My name is Samantha (Sam) Hart. I am originally from Australia, but moved to the US in 2005 after graduating from veterinary school. I initially was in the large animal world, and did a large animal surgery residency and large animal emergency and critical care fellowship on the east coast. After this, I completed a small animal emergency and critical care residency, before going on to work at large multi-specialty hospitals in Washington, DC, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. I moved to New Mexico to join Route 66 VECCC in August of last year and have loved being here since then! New Mexico is such a beautiful, special place! Route 66 VECCC has been an amazing hospital to work at, filled with amazing people. We have an amazing team here, and I am very lucky and proud to be a part of it!

🚲🐾💖A fun fact about me is that I LOVE mountain biking and being outside camping with my partner Ian and my Chiweenie Stuart as much as possible on my time off.

💉My favorite cases are cases where I can utilize my extensive training and background - DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis, Addisonian crisis, polytrauma, septic shock).

👩‍⚕️My favorite surgery is pyometra (infection in the uterus), but I love all surgeries, and endoscopy!

🐶💚My two most memorable cases so far at Route 66 have been Upepe (an adorable older Pug that presented right after I started for being neurologic, and ended up having hepatic encephalopathy due to liver shunts) and Mayzie (a sweet little Dachshund that presented with a septic abdomen and septic shock from a previous bladder surgery that we had to stabilize and do emergency surgery on).

⭐️I am excited to be a part of a team that can provide high quality medicine, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!
