🌸 Black Fly (Buffalo Gnat) Season is Here! 🐶
Every spring, we see quite a few dogs come in with scary-looking red spots or “bull’s-eye” rashes on their bellies. These spots are most commonly caused by black flies, also known as buffalo gnats, which are especially active during April and May in the Northeast.
What do these bites look like?
🔴 Small red spots or “bull’s-eye” lesions
🔴 Usually found on the belly or areas with less fur
🔴 May appear bright red or even look slightly bloody
🔴 Can be just a few spots or many at once
The good news? In most cases, these bites will resolve on their own within about a week and don’t require treatment.
Some dogs, however, may be more sensitive and may:
• Lick or scratch at the area
• Develop irritation or swelling
• Occasionally get secondary skin infections

Just one of the many wonderful perks of spring in the Northeast! 🌿🐾
