Bringing home a new cat?
The first days matter. Go slow and your cat and your dog will settle in happier. Here's how:
1️⃣ Start with a safe room
For the first few days, keep your cat in one room with food and litter tray at opposite ends. Spend plenty of time with your cat so it learns to trust you.
2️⃣ Give hiding spots
Cats feel safer when they can retreat. Add places to hide, such as under furniture, on a high surface, or in a cardboard box lying on its side. Keep these spots available for life.
3️⃣ Swap scents first
Rub soft cloths on your cat and your dog, then swap them. Your pets get to know each other's smell before they meet. Let your dog sniff at the door of the cat's room for short, supervised moments.
4️⃣ Let your cat explore
After a few days, let your cat roam the rest of the house while your dog is out on a walk. Lead your cat to high spots with treats so it knows where to escape.
5️⃣ Meet slowly and safely
Put a baby gate your dog can't jump over across the cat's doorway. Keep your dog on a long lead, and use commands and rewards if it tries to chase or greet too roughly.
Never leave them alone together until you're sure they won't hurt each other.
