🐱 Remember Sausage? 🐱

Earlier this year, lovely Sausage had to have one of her eyes removed. It can feel like a big and daunting decision, but sometimes removing a painful or problematic eye can make a huge difference to an animal’s comfort and quality of life.

And just look at her now! 🥹

Her mum, Caley, sent us an update to say Sausage has healed beautifully and is absolutely thriving. In fact, she doesn’t seem to have noticed she’s missing an eye!

She’s still her very chatty, cheeky self, with a particular talent for scaling doorframes and staring down her humans from above. 😂

We love seeing our patients doing so well after their treatment, and Sausage is a gorgeous little reminder of just how amazingly cats can adapt. Thanks to Caley for sharing her update with us! ❤

A little bird, a lot of love! 🐦

When a young pigeon found its way into our clinic, our lovely nurse Patricia stepped in to help.

With plenty of patience and TLC, Patricia cared for and raised the little bird until it was ready to spread its wings and return to the wild.

We snapped these sweet photos during a little sunshine break with Molly, giving the young pigeon a chance to stretch its wings and practise those all-important flying skills! 🪽

A very lucky little bird to have such a dedicated foster family.

🎆 Guy Fawkes is coming up! Is your pet ready? 🐾

While fireworks might be exciting for us, the loud bangs and bright flashes can be frightening for our animals.

A little preparation can go a long way towards helping pets feel safe and secure. Here are our top tips for Guy Fawkes:

🏡 Bring pets indoors before it gets dark, and keep windows and curtains closed.

📺 Turn on the TV or music to help mask the sound of fireworks.

🐾 Create a safe, familiar space where your pet can hide and feel secure. A blanket over a dog crate or a cosy cardboard box for your cat can work well. Just make sure they can come and go freely.

💙 Stay calm and reassuring, offering comfort if your pet seeks it.

🎆 Chat to your neighbours if you're expecting fireworks nearby, so you can plan ahead.

🐶🐱 Does your pet struggle with fireworks? Don't wait until the fireworks start! Talk to your local Vet Services team about ways to help manage their anxiety.

We stock products such as Adaptil for dogs, Feliway for cats and Thundershirts, as well as a range of prescription medications that may help pets experiencing fireworks anxiety.

☀️ Long weekend incoming!

A reminder that our Vet Services clinics will be closed for the upcoming public holidays:

📅 Friday 23 October – Hawke’s Bay Anniversary Day
📅 Monday 26 October – Labour Day

🌡️ Keep an eye on pets in the heatl: We've already seen several cases of heatstroke in dogs this month. Make sure your pets have plenty of shade and fresh water, and avoid exercising them in the heat.

🌱 Planning a bit of gardening? Keep slug bait, fertilisers and other garden chemicals well out of reach of curious paws.

🚨 Need a vet while we're closed? The wonderful team at HBAH will be available throughout the long weekend for urgent companion animal care.

Enjoy the sunshine, stay safe!

Meet Loco 🐶

At just 8 weeks old, Loco spent time in our Napier clinic after contracting parvovirus. He spent time in our isolation ward receiving intensive care from our amazing nursing team, including nurse Mads, who helped look after him throughout his recovery.

Fast forward to today, and Loco was back for his vaccination and recheck. The best part? He recognised Mads and ran straight over for a cuddle! 🥹

Seeing Loco healthy, happy, and thriving is the best reward, and we're pretty sure Mads enjoyed the reunion just as much as he did!
