West Plains Rescue Cat and kitten rescue in Invercargill, NZ. Registered charity. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome cats and kittens from around Invercargill.

Every cat in our care is desexed, vaccinated and microchipped before being adopted. We are able to work with neonatal kittens, can facilitate colony control, and TNR (trap neuter release). We are working on long term solutions to the stray cat population in Southland. Being a small organisation so we cannot take in large volumes of cats and kittens but we can offer advice, loan traps or equipment

to those in need and liaise with other rescue groups and organisations. Donations can be made to:

Are you drawn to the stranger things in life?

Well, let me draw your attention to Nougat. Not only is this cat confused about life, we were confused upon his arrival to the rescue. Poor Nougat was thought to be a girl until the day he went to the vet and his plums were discovered. We now use the correct pronouns he/him.

Now plum-less, Nougat is figuring out life and trying to figure out his personality. One minute he's eyes closed, mouth open, drooling as you give him a head massage. The next minute he's zipping around the cattery like he's never met you before in his life. Then there's the talking, this boy only seems to have one word is his vocab, and that's a growl! But he growls when happy or mad, so you never really know what to expect!

Nougat is super playful and very food driven. You can pat him and pick him up, just be prepared for him to verbally tell you his thoughts.. He's approx 7-9 months old. Could be okay as an only cat, but he tolerates other cats okay. Not good around young kids.

Dexter is settling in quite well so far and is not phased by my presence at all. If I reach in he will usually sniff my hand occasionally he gives a hiss. But otherwise, he doesn't run when I clean his crate or straighten his bedding. I know he's been playing too.

High hopes for this one! Aiming to be hand feeding by the weekend, am I nuts?

We know so many of you love watching our interactions with the rescue cats. Sharing their story, their journey and showing how we build trust with these cats means you can really feel like you are a part of their journey too.

Without the community behind West Plains Rescue, we simply could not do what we do, so we are going to bring you more content, more photos, videos and stories.

Here is Star during one of our hand feeding sessions. While the other cats are distracted by their own dinner, I spend one on one time with Star, encouraging her to interact with me without growling. While we can't pat her yet, we are slowly chipping away at the protective barriers she has up.

27/07/2026

Star absolutely loves dinner time. She gets excited, paces and gets super talkative. This is quiet compared to some nights!

Star has been moved back into a crate so we can work with her one on one, and restrict her from hiding with the other timid cats while still getting plenty of social time with the friendlier cats

Star is up for adoption. Be sure to follow us for the next video of her.

Winnie

This beautiful girl is still looking for a home. She would be best as an only cat.

She has reluctantly been moved into Gen-Pop at the rescue to make room for the newcomers. She continuously hisses and growls around the other cats so we know she needs to be on her own.

Winnie likes to play, be patted and is very inquisitive. She is super soft and has beautiful eyes. She's a talker too!

Winnie is desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and wormed. Message us with any questions or email [email protected] for an application

We know you've all been waiting for an Otto update! ❤️

Our little champ is now getting some time outside of his isolation crate and has a new roommate to keep him company. She's about the same size and just as fluffy, making their play fighting absolutely hilarious to watch!

Otto's tummy is settling, he's slowly gaining weight, and he's got so much more energy. He's continuing to settle in and we're so proud of his resilience.

Thank you to everyone who's been cheering Otto on.

Please note, we are not taking any applications for him currently.

Congratulations Anderson!

Some cats leave a big imprint on my heart, this boy will be a hard one to forget.

Anderson Houdini Boris (full title) started his rescue journey with a bang, escaping into the roof of the foster home and refusing to comply with attempts to contain him.

Once he made his way to us, the hissy little boy got a lot of one on one time until one day he cracked. The loving, gentle, kind boy shone through and since then, he has been the biggest love bug. When you ask him for a kiss, he comes up and gives you a big smooch on the lips!

Anderson has a new feline brother now, you might almost mistake them for twins! We hope the boys end up best friends and he goes easy on the big softie dog.

Meet Delilah,

I don't think her pupils could get any bigger right now!

The young girl was trapped at the same Waikiwi location and likely won't be the last. A small colony has been growing in the area so it will be great to get it controlled before summer when the likes of Delilah here would become a kitten factory.

No microchip and currently very spooked. We are fairly certain she is a she, but will confirm when she has had time to decompress.

Follow the page to keep up with Dexter and Delilah's progress.

Meet Dexter

This good looking chap was trapped in Waikiwi. He has a wicked scratch on his nose which tells me he has been getting into trouble with the other strays in the area.

He is not fixed or chipped, estimated 9 months old.

There are more to come from this trapping site. Be sure to follow the page to keep up with updates.
