West Plains Rescue

West Plains Rescue Cat and kitten rescue in Invercargill, NZ. Registered charity. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome cats and kittens from around Invercargill.

Every cat in our care is desexed, vaccinated and microchipped before being adopted. We are able to work with neonatal kittens, can facilitate colony control, and TNR (trap neuter release). We are working on long term solutions to the stray cat population in Southland. Being a small organisation so we cannot take in large volumes of cats and kittens but we can offer advice, loan traps or equipment

to those in need and liaise with other rescue groups and organisations. Donations can be made to:

Triton made it through his first 24 hours with us.

Don't let that little round belly fool you, he is a skeleton with skin draped on currently and it's going to him a while to gain back his health. The poor soul looks like he has a little bit of flu coming on, probably from being so unwell and cold.

He is using his litter box like a champion, and is eating and drinking on his own but we check on him regularly. He loves nesting in his little cave we made him and he's got a good voice too.

Bear gets so excited in the mornings when I come in to clean. He leans forward and locks eyes, telling me he wants his morning pats.

Bear is such a cool boy, he loves to nuzzle in and cuddle. He is getting more expressive and active around the cattery. Roman still picks on him, but as soon as Roman leaves to go to his new home I think Bear will really make some leaps and bounds.

If you can offer Bear an inside only life, please message us. This big boy will bring a lot of joy to whoever adopts him.

Bear

This big boy has earned the nickname Teddy Bear for good reason. He gets so excited for cuddles and attention, leaning in for chin scratches, pats and butt rubs.

Bear is nervous around other cats due to a rough life on the street but so far he seems to take no issue with them.

Bear is FIV positive, meaning he MUST be kept indoors 24/7 for the rest of his life. If you have other cats they must be vaccinated, ideally he would be an only cat.

Give him a healthy diet, healthy lifestyle and routine vet check ups and his prognosis for a long and happy life are high.

Bear likes to be cuddled and sit on your lap. He will make a great companion for someone wanting a friendly couch potato to watch movies with.

Message us if you think your home is right for Bear.

FOUND

Please keep a vigilant watch in the area below for any tiny kittens. We have had one brought to the rescue from Rockdale Road and he was barely alive; severely dehydrated, cold and hypoglycemic. Approx 6-7 weeks.

Please check your properties, keep a look out if walking or driving in the area. These kittens won't survive very long without care.

Meet Triton

This little kitten came to us on death's door this evening. He was picked up off Rockdale Road by some kind hearted people who brought him straight to us.

Triton was so dehydrated and emaciated when he arrived that he could no longer stand and his skin didn't even recoil when pulled. We started to warm him up and got some water syringed into him, however only minutes later he began to have seizures and evacuating his bowels (which were like black tar).

We managed to get some formula into him in between his intermittent seizures, which went on for about half an hour and stopped not long before we arrived at the vet.

He was a little champion throughout all the needles, although he really didn't like the thermometer up the bum. His temperature was low and he was hypoglycemic, his glucose level only 2.6

He is warming up and has even managed a tiny bit of kitten meat since returning to the rescue. Some honey and food overnight should keep his blood sugars on the rise.

Thanks to the people who rescued him off the road, and the wonderful vet who gave this little guy a fighting chance tonight. Otherwise, I don't think he would have seen tomorrow.

Meet Anthe and Deimos

These are two of Moon's babies and we've opted to name them after other moons in the galaxy.

Anthe is a very small moon of Saturn, and Deimos is a moon of Mars.

They're younger than expected and very dehydrated. Anthe is a teeny tiny 555g while her brother is 770g.

The third kitten will hopefully be trapped tomorrow - what moon do you think we should name it after?

For those who have sent in applications for kittens, thank you for your patience. We are going to be contacting the next people on our waiting list for viewings shortly so keep an eye on your inbox.

The next lot of kittens are expected to be adoption ready by early/mid February.

- Ezra, Noah, Lena, Xena
- Hazelnut, Pecan, Cashew

* Peanut: due to his deformity, we need to wait and see how his condition develops before we can adopt him out.
