You may have noticed its been a bit quiet on here for a while - that's because for the first time in 14 years I have decided to have a holiday!

Last week, however, saw a bustle of activity with SG Stud getting ready for the New Zealand Arabian Horse Society AGM and Stud Tour that was held for the first time in many years here in the Waikato.

SG Stud was proud to showcase our facilities for breeding and foaling as well as our resident stallions. We were blessed with incredible weather for this time of the year and this made the day very joyful.

We were very proud to present our Arabian stallions on the tour. All these lads are only groomed - no covers apart from Shell Fire who just has a waterproof sheet on.

Fed on Harvest Grains Feeds, all our horses are just glowing from the inside out 🥰

Big thanks to Kelly Mason from Kelaray Stud for leasing us such a superb mare that gave me everything I was after as a future replacement for our old lad here.
Helios is a moving machine with an incredible presence. There were many 'wows' when we brought him out.
We have a lot of interest in people wanting to use him this season. If you are very keen, please get in touch and, if we have enough interest, we will look at training him for AI collection and analyse his swimmers before we make a commitment to nominating him and opening him up to stud.
Potential Stud Fee for the 2026/2027 season $1,200+GST with a discount for the first 5 mares (to be discussed with the mare owners)

Huge congratulations to breeder Steph MacPherson and rider Emily Harrington with Impression winning the 120km Prodosa Boost Championships this weekend! Very well deserved win!

C-section video showing just a small amount of the huge team that is required for these situations.

The Vet that is pulling that foal out is very strong to lift and pull!

Thankfully no c-sections were required this season for foaling, but we did have two mares that required trips to the amazing Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre for foaling difficulties.

One for a mare that had a foal presenting very upside down and head back upon waters breaking and manual feel of birthing position. This didn't resolve with some manual repositioning and allowing the mares to try and roll the foal around. From Waters breaking until we made the move to drive her into the clinic for assistance and the foal being turned and foaling, the time was 40 minutes. Both survived and came back to SG Stud the next day after overnight monitoring.

The second was for a mare that we had to induce and foal on farm (an extremely rare occurrence) and her story will be told once I have finalised permission from her owner.

I cannot stress how important it is that mares are attended to at foaling, not only by an experienced team, but to also have a specialised equine vet (and clinic) very close by. This season there have been far too many foster mares required and foals lost from a lot of things that someone more experienced could have noticed and possibly prevented a loss.

People spend so much money, time and effort getting their mares in foal. There is such a long wait before foaling and so much emotion involved. Please send your mares away to experienced foaling places, that have oxygen and an equine vet and clinic on stand by.

Class 33: SG Stud - Boutique Equine Breeding Services FEI Young Rider – Freestyle to Music

The FEI Young Rider Freestyle to Music delivered quality performances and a standout result from one talented combination.

It was a dominant display from Samantha Belsham (Te Awamutu), who claimed both first and second place. Riding Donero RH, she took the win with an impressive 71.20%, producing a confident and expressive freestyle that combined technical accuracy with strong musical interpretation.

Backing that up immediately, Belsham secured second aboard Dolcetto II on 70.88%, narrowly missing another 71% score and showcasing remarkable consistency across two horses at this level.

Third place went to Gemma Lewis (Springston) with Ruanuku R, earning 65.79% after a composed and harmonious test.

A class that highlighted the depth and developing excellence within the Young Rider ranks, with freestyle flair very much on show.
