Today's adventure with Georgie and Lilly at New Brighton Beach. They loved swimming in the ocean playing with the floaty toy. Lilly also did her vest to bury her pinecone so Georgie couldn't have it.

❗️BREAKING❗️The Government has turned its back on public opinion and public safety - rejecting the Committee's recommendations to ban the public sale of fireworks.

SPCA is outraged and appalled by the Government's decision to ignore one of the clearest examples of public consensus on an animal welfare issue. A recent survey showed overwhelming public support for the ban, and to switch to professionally run displays only.

"This is a profoundly disappointing decision that leaves animals to continue suffering for no good reason," says Dr Arnja Dale, SPCA Chief Scientific Officer. "The evidence of harm is clear, the public wants change, and Parliament itself clearly recommended action. Yet the Government has chosen to do nothing."

Every year SPCA and other animal rescues receive countless calls regarding animals experiencing severe distress or injury caused by fireworks - but it goes far beyond that.

"Fireworks don't just frighten animals, they start fires. Those fires threaten companion animals, horses, livestock, wildlife, homes and the people who respond to them.

"The Government has missed an opportunity to protect animals, reduce fire risk and bring New Zealand's laws into line with public expectations. We will continue to advocate for change.”

The day has finally come. ⏱️❤️

After today, Friday 31 July 2026, greyhounds will no longer be raced for profit in New Zealand.

Over a decade of campaigning, and tireless efforts from SPCA and various animal welfare organisations and advocates has led to this historic moment.

From tomorrow, a brighter future begins for greyhounds - one where they have the freedom to run, not race.

Thank you to everyone who raised their voice for these dogs, and helped to achieve this long-awaited outcome. Learn more on our site: https://www.spca.nz/news-and-events/news-article/greyhound-racing-ends-july-2026

Today Jess and I had a great time at Sumner Beach. She loved sniffing all the interesting things and if she couldn't eat them then she peed on them. Which I think is totally fair.
She also loved playing with the orange floaty toy in the water.
