I'm sure the companion Animals register (an Australian business) means well... But seems there's a long game at play here and I'm not convinced trying to ram ideas through a council with no time frame for proper localised data to be worked through is fair to council or those with cats in the region.

🐈 New Plymouth’s Animals Bylaw review: cat management provisions still needed
Companion Animals New Zealand (CANZ) is disappointed that no new, specific provisions for cat management have been included in New Plymouth District Council’s proposed changes to its Animals Bylaw 2020.
We raised this during the Council’s early engagement and want to reiterate why appropriate cat management measures matter - helping cats live a good life while supporting their welfare, their communities and the environment.
Under the existing bylaw, there are no general requirements for owned cats to be desexed or be microchipped, and have their microchips registered with the New Zealand Companion Animal Register (NZCAR).
Across Aotearoa, 15 district councils have adopted bylaws incorporating one or more of these measures:
🔹 Mandatory microchipping
🔹 Registration of microchips on NZCAR, or another register approved by the council as equivalent
🔹 Early-age desexing of cats
This reflects growing recognition across local government that responsible cat guardianship is best supported through a combination of education, community engagement and appropriate regulation.
CANZ believes these measures can help support responsible cat ownership, improve the chances of lost cats being reunited with their families, and contribute to better companion animal welfare.
We’d welcome stronger consideration of cat management provisions to support cat welfare and responsible ownership. Have your say. Consultation on changes to the Animals Bylaw 2020 closes 4 November. https://haveyoursay.npdc.govt.nz/
