Tawhiri’s Story

Tawhiri was brought to us suddenly very unwell. He was lethargic, shaky, and his muscles were trembling. After talking with his owner, our vet Dr Lucy suspected he had been poisoned after eating some flax plants.

What likely caused this was tremorgenic mycotoxin poisoning. These are toxins made by moulds and fungi. Dogs most often come into contact with them by eating mouldy garden waste, compost heaps, rubbish, or rotting plant material where moisture allows mould to grow.

Our small animal team acted quickly. Tawhiri was given intralipid therapy, a special fatty fluid given through the vein that helps bind and neutralise these toxins in the bloodstream. He was also given activated charcoal by mouth to soak up any toxins that might still have been in his stomach.

These toxins can be very serious and may cause seizures or even be fatal. Dogs do best when treatment happens quickly. Once symptoms like shaking have started, close monitoring is essential.

Tawhiri was transferred to Massey after-hours for overnight care and monitoring. Thankfully, he responded very well to treatment, improved rapidly, and made a full recovery.

He’s now back home safe and sound with his family

Elf in the Chocolate… and a Warning for Pets! 🎄🍫🐶
Our mischievous elf has made himself comfortable in the chocolate stash — but while he’s enjoying the scene, it’s a perfect reminder that Christmas treats can be dangerous for dogs.

Christmas Foods to Keep Away from Dogs

🍫 Chocolate – contains theobromine; can cause vomiting, tremors, rapid heart rate, or worse.
🥓 Ham, fatty meats, and rich foods – can trigger pancreatitis, vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach upset.
🍬 Xylitol – found in sugar-free lollies, gum, and some baked treats; can cause dangerously low blood sugar and liver failure.
🥜 Macadamia nuts – cause weakness, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia.
🍷 Alcohol – even small amounts are toxic; can depress the nervous system and affect breathing.
🧁 Rich desserts – Christmas puddings, cakes, and pastries can upset tummies or cause obstructions.
🧄 Onions, garlic, chives – often found in stuffing or cooked foods; can cause anaemia in dogs.

Safety Tips for a Pet-Friendly Christmas
Keep all human food completely out of reach.
Only give pets treats made for dogs in moderation.
Watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors, or lethargy — call your vet immediately if you suspect poisoning.
Set up a safe zone during parties and celebrations to avoid accidental snacking.

Our elf may think chocolate is the ultimate festive playground,
but for dogs, a safe, pet-friendly Christmas is the real treat!

Today is the last day you’ll see our elf — we hope you’ve enjoyed his festive antics. Have a very Merry Christmas! 🎄✨

We have begun our facial eczema (FE) spore counting service for the season.

Remember, we collect dry counts and our trigger level is 12,000 so it would be wise to start thinking about what FE prevention measures you can put in place for your stock . For those using zinc in water for lactating cows, low doses should start now and increase gradually. Water treatment is not reliable for dry stock, young stock, or sheep, so a multifaceted approach is recommended: zinc, grazing management, identifying hot spots, and fungicide use.

Spore counts indicate district trends only and can vary between paddocks and farms. Wet counts and faecal spore counts are also available—please contact the clinic for advice.

Thanks to the SRV Trust and our team for making this service possible. We hope you have a Happy Christmas! 🎄

Booster Time! 💉🎄
Our clinic elf is rolling up his sleeve… or at least pretending to! He’s getting his booster vaccinations because staying fully protected is key.

Why Boosters Matter
Vaccines often need more than one dose to give full immunity.
A single shot is usually the start; boosters complete the protection.
Helps protect against serious diseases — not just for your pet, but for the whole community.

Puppies & Kittens
Puppies and kittens usually start vaccinations at 8 weeks, with boosters at 12 and 16 weeks.
Core vaccines for dogs include DHPPi (Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis & Parainfluenza) plus optional vaccines like Leptospirosis and Canine Cough.
Core vaccines for cats include Cat Flu (Feline calicivirus & Feline herpes virus type 1) and Feline panleukopenia

Stay On Schedule
Adult pets need annual boosters to maintain immunity.
Skipping boosters can leave your pets vulnerable to preventable diseases.

Our elf might be tiny, but he knows: full vaccination isn’t just a one-time thing — it’s about ongoing protection! 🐾💛

Thanks for being visit-ready!

With many of our calendars already fully booked and Christmas being a particularly busy time of year, a little preparation really helps our team.
Please have stock in the yards and horses caught before we arrive — it helps keep visits running smoothly and allows us to care for as many animals as possible.

We truly appreciate your help during this busy season.

Diving Into Wool… and Fly Prevention! 🐑🎄
Today our elf is buried in a fluffy pile of sheep’s wool — but while he’s having fun, flies are no joke for sheep.

Why Flystrike Matters
Flystrike occurs when flies lay eggs in dirty, damp, or soiled wool.

Hatched larvae (maggots) feed on the sheep’s skin, causing pain, infection, and sometimes death if not treated quickly.

The Best Prevention is Proactive
✔️ Regular inspection — check for soiled wool, cuts, or skin issues.
✔️ Use preventative treatments — insecticides and flystrike prevention products can protect your flock before problems start.
✔️ Shearing and crutching — keeping wool clean and trimmed reduces risk.
✔️ Environmental management — removing manure and reducing damp areas limits fly breeding sites.

Act Early, Avoid Crisis
Waiting until flies are already present or strike has occurred can be stressful and dangerous for your sheep. Preventative measures are always the safer, more effective choice.

Our elf might be enjoying a woolly playground,
but for sheep, staying fly-free and protected is serious business! 🐑💛

Elf Support Group: Desexed & Proud!
Today our elf is hosting a very important meeting… with a room full of desexed dogs. It’s basically a furry support group celebrating responsible choices!

For pet owners, desexing can feel like a big decision, but there’s really no reason to hesitate — especially when you consider the bigger picture.

Why Desexing Matters

🐶 Prevents unwanted litters – Shelters and rescues are already full, and most dogs don’t need to have a litter to be happy or fulfilled.
❤️ Health benefits – Lowers the risk of pyometra, a serious bacterial infection of the uterus in females and testicular cancer in males.
😺🐶 Behavioural perks – Can reduce roaming, aggression, and some marking behaviours.

When to Desex

Cats: usually around 4–6 months

Dogs: from 6 months, but timing can vary depending on breed and vet advice

Our elf and his furry friends agree: early desexing is safe, responsible, and helps your pet live a healthier, happier life.
Plus, it helps reduce pressure on rescues — everyone wins!
