It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Nelius Sexton, Cullinagh, Courtmacsherry, Co Cork.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the Sexton family at this difficult time, in particular to his daughter Anita, our esteemed Nursery Co-ordinator, his grandchildren and players Lucia and Dara, and his son-in-law and coach Mick.

Match Report

Multy 6-18 (36)
Legends 4-25 (40)

St Stephen’s Day in Multy, and the new scoreboard had a workout! nearly running out of space for all the scoring and not close attempts at scores on goal.

Before a ball was even kicked you knew exactly what kind of occasion it was. The smell of Deep Heat was hanging heavier in the air than a fog over the pitch, as the older lads loosened out with stretches that owed more to experience than flexibility. There were calves being rubbed, hamstrings being negotiated with, and the odd wince that told you this warm-up was a championship in its own right.
From behind jackets and kitbags emerged the real winter fuel. Hip flasks and home made brews making quiet appearances, containing whiskys and God knows what other restorative concoctions they were handed around with the secrecy of a short Kick-out. “Medical purposes,” of course.

By the time the ball was thrown in, the legends were warmed inside and out, and ready at least in theory. Once the game got going, it was pure GAA theatre. The current players covered ground like they’d a GPS strapped on, while the legends conserved energy like men who knew there was a long second half and a longer evening ahead. There were solos taken at walking pace, passes weighted with the confidence of fellas who’ve seen more winters than training sessions, and one outrageous 2 pointer kick from Mick McDonnell, outside-of-the-boot score that was celebrated like a last-gasp winner in Croke Park.
Defending was optional, tracking back was “under review”, and the referee (Henry Reilly) wisely kept the whistle in his pocket, adopting a strict “sure we’re all friends here” policy. The umpire’s white flags were getting more exercise than some of the full-forwards, and nobody, least of all the scoreboard, was overly concerned with accuracy.
When the final whistle eventually sounded on time, and without any injury-time drama! the real cooldown began, and the home brews made a second appearance for recovery purposes!!!

The Multy Memorial Cup was presented to Jimmy Ward in recognition of his wife Mary's work for the Club. by Club President Ann Newman to great applause by all there.

Money raised on the gate of €835.60. Will be donated to Asiam.ie Ireland’s Autism Charity. Who do great work for children with Autism. Thanks to everyone who supported this.

Thanks to Kath OGrady Reilly and John Mccauley for taking some photos

Multy once again proved that when it comes to St Stephen’s Day football, they know how to strike the perfect balance between serious skill and serious craic. A win for the parish and community sure isn’t that the only result that ever really matters.

🇶🇦 Multyfarnham GAA – Christmas Message 🎅

As the year winds down and we reflect on our journey, Multyfarnham GAA would like to sincerely thank all our players, coaches, managers, supporters, parents, volunteers and committee members for your incredible commitment, dedication and support throughout 2025. It has been a year filled with progress, pride and unforgettable moments both on and off the field, and every one of you has played a part in it.

A particular highlight was the Multyfarnham Film Awards in November, where over 90 actors came together with a common goal — to create something truly special for our community. Many of those involved weren’t even from the area, yet they stood beside us and proudly supported our club, helping to fund our Astro Turf development project — a facility that will benefit generations of young Gaels to come. This was community spirit at its finest.

We would also like to extend our thanks to all of our generous sponsors for standing behind the club and helping us continue to grow. Your support strengthens our facilities, our programmes and — most importantly — our young people.

To everyone in our community near and far, we wish you a very happy, peaceful and enjoyable Christmas, and a healthy, successful and rewarding New Year ahead. 🎉

And of course, we hope all our players are on Santa’s good list and wake up to something magical under the tree tomorrow morning! 🎅⚽🇶🇦 ️

Thank you all for being part of the Multyfarnham GAA family.

Tribute to Mary Ward – A Lifetime of Service
Mary Ward returned home from England in 1973 and, alongside her husband Jimmy Ward and Martin Melia, played a central role in reforming our club during its early days.
From the very beginning, Mary gave selflessly of her time and energy. Whether it was washing jerseys, supporting players, or working quietly behind the scenes, she was always there when help was needed. Mary went on to serve as Club Secretary for over 10 years, carrying out the role with dedication, integrity, and pride.

She was also a driving force behind the club’s fundraising efforts, organising numerous sponsored cycles over the years, including memorable routes from Dublin, Boyle, Ballinasloe, and Portlaoise to Multyfarnham — events that not only raised vital funds but strengthened the sense of community around the club.

Mary also had a strong and lasting involvement with Multyfarnham Handball Club, a club that held a very special place in her heart. Having moved to Multyfarnham from England, Mary often spoke of how the club provided her with a wonderful way to get to know local people and integrate herself into village life. Through sport and community, she formed friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Mary’s commitment, generosity, and tireless service helped shape the clubs and community we know today. Her contribution will never be forgotten, and her legacy will live on in the heart of the community she served so faithfully.

It is with great honour that the Multyfarnham GAA Memorial Cup will be dedicated to Mary Ward this year, in recognition of her lifelong service, unwavering commitment, and the lasting impact she made on our clubs and village.
