Match Report:
Intermediate Championship Round 2

Multyfarnham 0-24 - Milltown 1-21(24)

On a sunny humid afternoon in Cusack Park, Multyfarnham and Milltown produced a cracking championship encounter, sharing 48 points in a contest that ebbed and flowed right to the last kick.

Milltown broke from the throw-in headed towards the Dunnes Stores end of the pitch, but Jake O’Neill’s pressure forced an early wide. Multy quickly hit their stride, Cian Lee opening the scoring after fine work from Mark Reynolds and Mattie Thornton to raise a white flag. A monster 57-metre free from Ronan Wallace in the 3rd min his first of six two-point scores lit up the early minutes.

Milltown responded with two points in quick succession before Thornton found the target from play. Anthony McGivney then split the posts after excellent link play from James Greene, Jack Leavey, and Cian Lee. Reynolds soon added another from the kick-out.

Wallace’s radar remained sharp, firing over a second two-pointer from distance, before Lee was fouled, and the number 6 converted again to leave Multy 0-9 to 0-3 ahead after 18 minutes. Milltown clawed back a couple from frees, but Wallace replied with his first from play. The Greens struck again from a placed ball, only for Thornton to add another fine score after neat interplay.

A turning point arrived late in the half when a Multy attack broke down, and Milltown countered clinically, netting the game’s only goal. That green flag cut the deficit to a single point at the break: 0-12 Multy to 1-8 Milltown

Second Half End-to-End Drama

Facing into the wind, Multy made the early running with Wallace winning and converting a free. Thornton then orchestrated a patient move, combining with Leavey, Mullaniff, and Wallace, who finished sweetly off his left.

Milltown, with the breeze, began to impose themselves, landing a 45, and pouncing on a stray kick-out for another, and adding a series of points By the 41st minute, Milltown led by three (0-14 to 1-14) Milltown pressure leads to another kickout going astray and being pointed by the Green's on 44mins, to lead by 4.

Thornton stopped the rot with a superb solo point (his third). but the Green's hit the next when the maroons kick possession away from a quick free to make it 4 between the sides again.

Ronan Greene and McGivney link up and win a free just outside the box, which Wallace puts over. Milltown pulled for two hops a quick free from Stephen Sweeney leaves Wallace to point

With ten minutes left, James Greene is brought down outside the arc on the stand side of the pitch. Wallace, from an acute angle off the ground, has the umpire raising the orange flag once again on 52 mins, his 4th 2-pointer to level matters again. Milltown edged back ahead, but Jamie Coffey, barely on the pitch, equalised for the third time. 0-20 to 1-17

The Green's hold possession across the field and finish with a white flag raised and 1 ahead. Cian Lee put his body on the line to prevent another point. McGivney with the tap and go to Coffey, then James Greene to McGovern wins a free at 48 metres out, Wallace stepped up confidently for his 5th 2 pointer of the match and to lead by 1 on 57 mins played.

Milltown, at the other end, put over a 2 point from a free on 59 mins played. Then, raised a white flag in the same min to push them two points ahead with 2mins injury time to play. From Sweeney kick out to Wallace and fouled in the build-up to the last score, gets straight back up to join the play and kick his 6th 2-pointer score of the game from outside the arc over on the terrace side managed to draw the teams level for the 4th time with the score of the match in the 61th min.

Multy overturned possession in the dying seconds. There was still time for one last chance. Ian McGovern’s effort drifted agonisingly wide in the final seconds.
