🔔🐴🫘 “Mares get beans too” 🫘🐴🔔

So often I’m in a yard cleaning a gelding and someone walks by and comments “I’m so glad I have a mare and don’t have to do that” To which I usually reply.. Well actually “Do you know mares can get beans too..”

Mares have a number of small pockets of skin just inside their V***a called the “Clitoral Fossa” which can fill up with sm**ma and potentially form uncomfortable “beans”. 🫘

For some mares this can cause significant discomfort or even stimulation.. 🫣

Signs to look out for that your mare may have a bean..

🐴 Itching and rubbing her tail a lot (but you are up to date on worming)
🐴 Sudden bucking or kicking which is out of character.
🐴 Constantly in season? Or Marish?

🤍Please get in touch to book your mare in for a full hygiene wash, bean removal & health check.

Wishing all the horses & ponies that I’ve travelled around the country to clean over the last few weeks that are competing at The dublinhorseshow the very best of luck! Wow I removed some whopper beans 🫘. Some very happy & relieved horses afterwards. I’m off to Tipperary & Waterford today to do the last few that are competing this weekend.

Just realized I haven’t posted in quite a while.. I’ve been super busy between traveling around the country sheath cleaning & running my livery yard.
I’ve always been aware of the lack of knowledge and misinformation out there about a horses sheath area. Anyone that has met me knows how passionate I am about helping to educate others and sharing my knowledge in order to help all horses, ponies, minis & donkeys. There’s such strong need to highlight the importance of regular sheath cleans & health checks by a hygienist to all equine owners. Unfortunately over the last couple of weeks alone I have discovered two horses a pony & a mini with significant growths that have either already proven to be cancerous or are awaiting results. One has already undergone successful surgery in UCD who are amazing at what they can do. The others have been referred to their vet for assessment. Had any of these had regular checks any abnormalities would have been discovered early on and the horses would not have had to suffer in silence. The worst thing is having to deliver the bad news to the owners as they always feel so awful and blame themselves for not having noticed sooner, but they are not to blame! We really need to help to educate each other on the importance of sheath cleaning!

One of my favorite things about my job is all the different horses and ponies I get to meet.. Recently I had the privilege of cleaning this absolute beauty, to say I was in awe of him is an understatement! He is a French Comtois and one of only 2 in the country! Lucky me.. 🩶🤍

(Images taken during biopsy)
I don’t want to shock people with these images but I feel it’s important to share them to raise awareness on how important it is for geldings & stallions to have regular sheath cleans & checks. Excess sm**ma is believed to be carcinogenic and attributed to the cause of cancerous growths. These images are of a clients horse that I also coach. She asked me to clean him and shortly after starting I was extremely concerned by what I was feeling. We arranged an urgent vet check and found the following suspected squamous cell carcinoma. A biopsy was taken and unfortunately the results confirmed our suspicions. He had a squamous cell carcinoma. The owner was devastated and felt awful that she hadn’t noticed, but because of this he rarely fully extended to p*e and would only go in his stable privately. At 21 years of age it wasn’t an easy decision to go ahead with the surgery but he passed all his health checks and his owner was determined to do everything possible for him. Very shortly after he underwent surgery in UCD. It was thankfully very successful, he had a foot and half removed from his p***s. He’s back in work now and in great form, he’s more forward and tracking up beautifully. He happily drops his little W***y now all the time 😊🐴

So after putting my back out a few weeks ago I was disappointingly forced to cancel my Mayo route. I rescheduled to this week but then had a mole removed 2 days before my planned trip I didn’t think this would be an issue but the doctor stressed no strenuous activity for up to 2 weeks, really..🙄 So It was a rather interesting conversation when I said I was going to be working in Mayo for 2 days and had to explain what I was going to be doing… 😳😂 So I think he was that perplexed by my answer that I never really found out if it was going to be ok 😂.. Anyway what equestrian ever follows their doctor’s advice.. So off I went to Mayo! Well I had the most wonderful 2 days, I travelled over 500km but it was worth it as everyone I met was just so nice and welcoming! I removed some substantial beans 🫘 so lots of happy comfortable boys in Mayo now. I even got to see Charlie who used to be a working livery in my riding school and was spending the summer in the most beautiful trekking center to trim up. The weather was fabulous on Thursday and the views were just stunning 🤩🏝️ I’m looking forward to returning there again soon. A special thank you to Ruth & Grainne for spreading the word for me.. 😊🐴🧼🫘
