With Bonfire Night just a few days away, it's time to start thinking how to reduce the stress of pets who might be worried by fireworks.

The loud bangs and flashes of fireworks can be frightening for many pets, triggering fear, stress and anxiety, and it can be a challenging time for owners, too, who are concerned about their animals.

There are steps you can take to help your pets beat the firework fright this Bonfire Night, including these 3 tips from VetPartners:-

🎆Create a den where your dog can take refuge if they want to, such as in their crate or under a table. Add cosy bedding they can snuggle into, pop a favourite toy inside and offer nutritious treats to distract them. Draping heavy blankets or duvets over the top and sides of the den can help muffle the sound of fireworks

🎆Try classical music to help soothe pets or play some Japanese Taiko drumming - its deep, steady rhythm is similar to the low-frequency soundwaves of fireworks and can help mask them.

🎆Aim to walk your dog before the bangs and flashes start. As some pets can get so worried by noise they lose their appetite, consider bringing dinner time forward as well.

Don't forget that your veterinary practice can be a great source of advice and support to help calm anxious pets, and if your pet is particularly upset by loud noises, they will be able to recommend supportive treatments and products that may help.

🐾 Helping your senior pet live life to the full. 🐾

Owning an older pet is hugely rewarding and there's little that can match the special bond you will have developed between you over the years. ❤️

You'll want to do your very best for them, so check out these five tips that can help them thrive through their golden years:

🐾 Don’t ignore the little changes - watch out for subtle signs that may indicate the start of a health issue. Early detection can help prevent more serious health problems and improve a pet's quality of life.

🐾 Exercise remains important as pets get older, so keep them moving but adapt their exercise where necessary, such as taking them for shorter walks more often if they're struggling on longer walks.

🐾 Keep an eye on their waistline as extra weight can put additional pressure on joints, make arthritis harder to manage and increase the risk of other health problems.

🐾 Dental issues become increasingly common as pets get older, so consider regular dental check-ups. Professional cleaning under anaesthetic, where appropriate, can remove tartar and help protect the teeth and gums.

🐾 Mental stimulation can help keep an older pet’s brain active. Encourage your pet’s natural scenting skills by hiding toys or treats under small boxes or plastic cups, or by using puzzle toys, feeders and snuffle mats.

🎉 Exciting news for our colleagues at Isabelle Vets in Guernsey!

Work is progressing well on Isabelle Vets Garenne Hospital, which is on track to open in early 2027 – and has reached a major milestone with approval to become Guernsey’s first veterinary hospital!

The state-of-the-art facility will offer an expanded range of diagnostic, surgical and inpatient services for pets and horses, including a CT scanner and dedicated equine facilities, alongside the personal, local care Isabelle Vets is known for.

🎉Celebrating our amazing veterinary receptionists 🎉

Today is Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Day, when we say a huge thank you to the superheroes in our practices who do so much to support clients and their pets. 🙏

One of our amazing reception colleagues is Jenny Hodgkins, who is marking a very special milestone at E C Straiton & Partners. 🎈

Jenny has worked at the Staffordshire practice for an incredible 40 years and has enjoyed a rewarding career. She joined as a trainee nurse in 1986, went on to pass her exams to become an RVN and then stepped up to head nurse before joining the front of house team as head receptionist.

Jenny says that her supportive colleagues, the practice’s friendly and loyal clients and her love of animals have kept her in a role she loves for so long.

She said: “I have enjoyed every minute of my 40 years at EC Straiton Vets and I have been very lucky to work with such a lovely team of people, who are highly dedicated and always put the care of pets above all else."

Huge congratulations to Jenny, who is pictured marking the milestone with her colleagues. 🎂

Ex-racehorse Baz suffered an unusual injury that has left his owner and vet puzzled.

The 20-year-old horse was found with what seemed to be a fairly minor cut on his hindquarters, but when it was examined by Keesjan Cornelisse of Penbode Equine Vets, a large metal hook was discovered under his skin.

Keesjan was able to carefully remove the hook and repair the wound, and Baz has gone on to make an excellent recovery.

Keesjan went to examine Baz after being sent a photo of the wound and said the hook, which was attached to the wall of Baz's field shelter, would have needed a huge amount of force to push it deep under the skin.

Mary said: “I’m so grateful to Keesjan for being so thorough and attentive and for recommending that the wound needed checking, or the hook could have remained there for a lot longer. He has been my vet for many years, and I know he’ll always give Baz the best care."

🏆 Clyde Vets team praised for saving Staffie pup who swallowed an earring

Otis, a cheeky 14-week-old Staffie ended up at Clyde Vets after grabbing an earring from his owner Jordan’s ear – and swallowing it!

When inducing vomiting didn’t work, X-rays revealed the earring was sitting in Otis’s stomach with its sharp clasp open. 😳

Thankfully, vet Nikki Hamilton and the team were able to use an endoscope and carefully retrieve the earring without the need for more invasive surgery.

After a very worrying few hours, Otis made a fantastic recovery and is now back to being his playful puppy self. ❤️

Nikki said the team were so relieved when they successfully removed the earring that “a cheer went up in the operating theatre!”

Well done to the Clyde Vets team for their skill and quick thinking in saving Otis! 👏🐾

A tree stump that had been hidden at the bottom of a garden for more than 20 years caused an horrific injury to pet Maggie.

The playful five-year-old Cocker Spaniel chased her ball into bushes and collided with the stump, leaving her with a 15cm-wide wound.

She was rushed to Broughton Veterinary Group in Leicestershire, where vet Belinda McGrane performed delicate surgery to reattach a large flap of skin.

Thanks to the prompt treatment and follow up care at Broughton Vets, Maggie has made a great recovery and the wound has healed.

🌱 Making a difference, one greener step at a time 🌱

Prince Bishop Vets in Country Durham has become the first VetPartners practice to introduce two SageTech Veterinary VET-Dock units.

🐾 When a pet has an operation, only around 5% of the anaesthetic gas used is absorbed by the patient. The remaining 95% would otherwise become waste and be released into the atmosphere.

The VET-Docks capture that waste gas in reusable canisters, which are returned to SageTech so the anaesthetic agents can be safely removed and the canisters reused.

Across UK veterinary practices, waste anaesthetic gas is estimated to contribute around 74,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year – so this is an important step.

And there’s more. Many VetPartners practices have also introduced:
♻️ Containers for hard-to-recycle items, helping reduce landfill waste.
📚 Recycling awareness notices around practices.
🐝 Wildlife areas with bee-friendly plants for nature – and a lovely space for our team to enjoy a break.

We’re proud of the progress we’re making as VetPartners works towards its ambition to achieve Net Zero by 2045, and we will keep looking at what more we can do 🌿

🚴 Cycle challenge success!🚴

A Dorset vet has helped raise £16,000 for a men's mental health charity by cycling the length of Great Britain.

Dave Harding, clinical director of Damory Veterinary Clinic , clocked up 1,000 miles cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats in aid of Andysmanclub, a men's su***de prevention charity that runs support groups around the UK.

The ride was organised by Dave and his friend Dave James, whose stepson died by su***de last year.

Thanks to the generosity of friends, family, colleagues, clients and supporters along the way, £13,230 was raised through a JustGiving page and an additional £3,000 was donated by VetPartners through its charity fund.

Dave said: "It feels like such an achievement to have completed the ride, and I am delighted that we have raised so much money for such a worthy charity. Thank you to everyone who donated and to the friends and family who joined me along the route."
