Water Safety Post 💦

I thought I’d do a little post about water safety. As the weather gets warmer, many of us head to rivers, lakes and beauty spots with our dogs, but it’s important to remember that not all water access points are as safe as they first appear.

Always remain vigilant when walking near water and, before allowing your dog to enter, take a moment to check how easy it will be for them to get back out. Some areas have steep banks, sudden drop-offs, deep water close to the edge, or limited exit points that can make it difficult for dogs (and people) to get out safely.

A spot may look beautiful and inviting, but it’s always worth assessing the risks first.

So lovely to be back out on our usual walks today now the temperatures have finally dropped ☁️🐾

The dogs had the BEST time being back on the fields, sniffing, exploring, playing and enjoying their adventures together again 💚

At St John’s Walkies, my groups are kept small and carefully blended to ensure the dogs are happy, comfortable and well matched. I also keep travel time to a minimum so the dogs spend more time enjoying their walk and less time in the van 🐶

This weekend a heartbreaking incident saw a dog lose its life from heat stroke whilst in the care of an unlicensed home boarder. 💔

The boarder lied and said they were licensed 🤬🤬🤬

It’s a devastating reminder of why choosing a LICENSED home boarding service matters so much.

Licensed boarders are required to:
✔️ Have inspections carried out
✔️ Complete risk assessments
✔️ Meet animal welfare standards
✔️ Hold appropriate insurance
✔️ Follow safety procedures for weather, exercise, transport and emergencies

Sadly, when people operate without a licence, these checks often aren’t in place — leaving dogs at risk and owners with little protection if the worst happens.

Please, before leaving your beloved pets with anyone:
🐾 Ask to see their licence
🐾 Check insurance cover
🐾 Read reviews
🐾 Visit the premises first
🐾 Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Jasmine and Penny keeping cool in their freshly soaked cooling jackets and collars 🐾💦

These can work really well in warm weather when used properly, but it’s really important to keep checking them regularly and re-soaking them every 20–30 minutes. Once they start to dry out, they can actually begin trapping heat rather than helping to cool your dog down.

Always supervise, keep offering water and shade, and remember that cooling aids are there to support sensible heat management — not replace it ☀️🐶

Life at St John’s Walkies during a heatwave ☀️🐾

No walks today as it’s simply too hot for safe dog walking. Fortunately for the dogs, all owners are at home keeping them cool, calm and comfortable indoors 🩵

For my home boarders, the focus during extreme temperatures is always rest, relaxation and staying cool indoors. The dogs have access to fans in every room they’re using, air conditioning, plenty of fresh water, and iced stuffed lick mats and Kongs to help keep them settled and comfortable while the temperature outside is soaring ❄️🐶

Keeping dogs cool, calm and safe will always be my top priority during hot weather. Sometimes the best care we can give is knowing when not to walk 🐾🐾
