Our routine client area typically, incorporates a 25-mile drive from the practice at Willoughton. This is to safeguard the delivery of an efficient emergency service should it be required by our patients.

Wallace receiving a plasma transfusion due to a low IgG blood result. This is a consequence of failure of passive transfer (the transfer of antibodies in the mare’s colostrum).

Antibodies are crucial to helping fight pathogens (ie. bacteria and viruses) and because the foal is reliant upon receiving these from the mare in early life, boosting them when low is advised to ensure optimal immunity and the very best start in life.

Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) can manifest in a range of clinical signs that may impact performance and well-being. These indicators can include, but are not limited to:

🐴 decreased athletic performance
🐴 alterations in behaviour
🐴 sensitivity upon application of girth
🐴 episodes of recurring colic
🐴 unexplained weight loss or poor body condition.

We are currently offering a specialised, all-inclusive price of £250 (inclusive of VAT) for this clinic, including the following:

🐴 Comprehensive gastroscopy procedure
🐴 Necessary sedation for the examination
🐴 Overnight livery to facilitate adequate pre-procedure starving

❗EQUINE FLU UPDATE ❗

You may be aware that there is a significant increase in cases of equine influenza across the UK at the moment, including in our area. Equine flu is a highly contagious viral disease effecting the respiratory system.

To ensure that you are keeping your horses protected from this outbreak you should stay vigilant and regularly check for signs of disease. Symptoms could include:

An increased temperature (over 35.5 degrees C)
A dry cough
Nasal discharge ranging from clear and watery to thick and green
Loss of appetite
Lethargy
Swollen glands around the jaw area that are painful

Also ensure that your biosecurity measures are robust, equine flu is an airborne disease spread by horse-to-horse contact, but also indirectly via humans and shared equipment such as feed and water buckets. Horses that are showing symptoms should be quarantined, if possible, to limit the spread of disease.

Equine flu has an incubation period of 1 to 5 days and can spread quickly, particularly amongst youngsters and unvaccinated horses. Ensuring that your horses' vaccinations are up to date is an essential preventative healthcare measure.

Since we opened the practice in 2023 we have been pleased to offer our popular zone visits for vaccines, dentals, blood samples and prescription medication checks as part of our wide range of veterinary services available to clients.

In order to keep this service deliverable and sustainable, as of the 1st May 2026 we have made the difficult decision to introduce a small charge of £10 per zone visit booked. This fee can be split between two clients booking appointments for horses on the same yard, if there are more than two clients at the same yard each client will be charged £5.

We understand that fee increases are always unwelcome news, but we expect that by introducing a small fee we will be able to maintain the zone days service and continue to work in a sustainable way to deliver routine care to our clients and your horses.

🐴 We are celebrating Veterinary Receptionist Week! 🐴

In particular, we are celebrating our fabulous administration team Sally and Rosie who are at the heart of the practice and do a wonderful job. They are the first point of contact for all our clients and visitors both on the phone and in person and are always ready to help with a smile.

They have many tasks including booking appointments, updating records, arranging medication requests, organising diaries, responding to emails and providing support to clients with all manner of queries and questions. They work closely with the vet team to help the day go smoothly, (even the bumpy ones!) and help to ensure that we can deliver the best possible veterinary care and services to our client's and their horses.

We really are very grateful for all that they do, especially for their unwavering dedication to the practice and our clients.
