Your dog’s behaviour won’t look the same every day, and that’s normal.

One of the most important things in training and day-to-day life for both humans and animals is understanding that mental capacity changes from day to day.

How does this look for your dog?

Your dog may have understood a cue perfectly yesterday, but today they might be tired, overstimulated, anxious, frustrated, excited, sore, distracted, or simply struggling to process information in the same way.

And honestly? The same applies to us too.

The last couple of weeks have been no different for me.
We’ve been busy, the hot weather has been draining, my dad has been poorly and in hospital, and Whitstable now had no water, on top of that my horse’s hay has tripled in price.

None of these things seem huge on their own, but together they slowly creep in and reduce our capacity to cope with extra tasks or mental load.

Good training isn’t about expecting the same performance every single day. It’s about learning to work with the animal in front of you, in that moment.

Sometimes that means lowering criteria.
Sometimes it means simplifying the exercise.
Sometimes it means slowing down, taking breaks, changing the environment, or ending on a small success instead of pushing through.

Progress isn’t linear, and training shouldn’t be based purely on “they knew this yesterday.”
When we adjust what we’re doing based on our dog’s emotional and mental state, we create clearer communication, more trust, and better long-term learning.

The goal isn’t perfection every session.
The goal is understanding, teamwork, and helping our animals feel safe enough to learn.

Sometimes the biggest breakthrough comes from changing how we approach the dog in front of us. If you need support, I’d love to help.

Have you currently got your dog giving you the look as if to say… “why has my whole routine changed with this hot weather… and what are we doing instead?” 🐶☀️

These last few hot days can leave some dogs feeling a little… bored.

Others, like my dog Bonnie, have been fully embracing the chilled life and sleeping straight through most of it.
But the second the temperature drops a little, like tomorrow, even the chilled dogs suddenly perk up a little and are ready to do something again.

That’s where Scent Scouts comes in.
Tomorrow at 10:30am you can join us at Clowes Woods for a chance for your dog to do what they naturally do best… use their incredible nose.

In the cool shade of the woods, your dog will explore fun scent detection, designed to engage their brain, build confidence, and tap into their natural instincts.

Sniffing is so much more than “just smelling” for a dog it’s mentally enriching, calming, problem solving, and surprisingly tiring too.

Perfect for warmer weather when long walks and high-energy activities aren’t ideal.

So whether your dog has been bouncing off the walls or happily snoozing through the heat like Bonnie… tomorrow’s cooler weather makes it the perfect time to get them out, engaged, and having fun again.

📍 Clowes Woods
🕥 Wednesday 27th May — 10:30am

Beat the heat, enjoy the shade, and let your dog discover the power of their nose.

Are you struggling with your puppy turning into a teenage whirlwind?
Or wanting to give your puppy the very best start possible?

We can help❤️

I’m Millie one of the trainers at Hoof and Paws and alongside our classes, I absolutely love working 1-1 with dogs and their owners.

Having that dedicated time together allows me to tailor training plans to each individual dog and really support owners through every stage of their journey.

My speciality and biggest area of interest is puppies and adolescent dogs.
Over the years I’ve worked with an array of different dogs and behaviours, alongside gaining a bundle of canine qualifications that continue to develop my knowledge and training approach.

What I love most is helping shape puppies into confident, well-rounded dogs, while supporting owners through the sometimes challenging adolescent stage that can often feel overwhelming.

Whether you need help with confidence building, lead walking, recall, engagement or navigating those teenage dog behaviours, 1-1 sessions are designed around you and your dog’s individual needs.

If you’re looking for more personalised support and training, pop us a message on WhatsApp, both Jess and I have some availability for June.

A reminder for the dog owners who are finding things a lot right now.

You do not need to fix everything at once.
Training is a journey you go on together with your dog 💙

If a behaviour has been happening for a while, it may not to be an overnight fix and that’s okay, making first steps with the correct support is how change happens.

Think of it like creating a new pathway in your dog’s brain.
They’ve spent time practising the same behaviour, so it’s become a habit, especially if they’re getting some kind of reward from it.

As humans we know new habits can take time to build, it’s our job is to help build a new pathway and make the new behaviour more rewarding and worth repeating for your dog.

That takes time, consistency, patience… and the right support.

There can be a lot of pressure around progress but here’s the thing
Progress doesn’t have to be perfect, and you don’t have to figure it out alone.

If you’re struggling with your dog’s behaviour and want realistic training that works for both you and your dog, drop us a message to chat about how we can support you on your training journey.

Walks feeling stressful lately? or just running out of ideas on what to actually do you with your dog?

We believe every dog is different...
Some just need the right support, the right outlet, and someone who truly understands them.

At Hoof & Paws, we offer real-world, judgement-free training designed to help dogs (and their humans) feel more confident navigating everyday life.

Here’s how we can help:
🐾 1:1 Training & Behaviour Support
Tailored sessions built around your individual dog to improve communication, confidence and everyday skills in a way that feels achievable for both of you.

🐾 Walk & Train
We collect your dog from home and work on things like recall, loose lead walking and reactivity out on real walks, then on our return we provide you with feedback and next steps so progress continues at home too.

🐾 Scent Scouts
Perfect for curious, energetic and busy-brained dogs who need a fulfilling outlet. Through scent work games and challenges, dogs learn to focus, problem-solve and settle naturally.

🐾 Leash & Learn
Real-world support for dogs who struggle on walks. We work in a small group on loose lead walking, engagement, calmness, recall and over-excitement in the places you actually walk every day.

And the support doesn’t stop after class ✨
All Scent Scouts and Leash & Learn clients are invited into our supportive WhatsApp community for ongoing guidance, encouragement and shared wins along the way.

If you’re not sure where to start, send us a message and tell us a little about your dog, what’s feeling difficult, what you’d love help with, and we’ll guide you towards the best fit for both of you. 🤍

Observation and Insight Workshop: Scent Work

Today on our workshop with K9 Splash & Trail we were joined by three individuals dogs and their handlers.

During this workshop handlers had the opportunity to take a step back and observe their dogs being handled by a professional and whilst being instructed by another

we spoke about how the professional was handling, body language, how they as a handler could impact their dog’s success of a find .. and their dog’s emotional processing.

For the second half of their session we handed the lead back to their handlers and allowed them to put in practice these new founded skills..

the feed back was incredible… but also so was the results!

Dogs were more relaxed, more accurate finds, and calmness, creating a beautiful connection between handler and their dog!

If you’d like to start your scent work journey pop us a message with your number & dog’s name to get started by joining our WhatsApp community!

“Do you still cater for all animals?”

The answer is YES 💚

This week, we received a message asking if we still offer care for other species because we’ve been posting a lot about our dog training services.

While we are incredibly passionate about dog training and love sharing that side of what we do, and will continue to shout about our dogs who’ve had amazing wins in their journey with us.

we wanted to reassure everyone that caring for all species is still at the heart of Hoof & Paws.

In the day to day along side training we are still running our … as usual (busy) doing:
Solo/ same household dog walking
Walk and train services
Pet check ins (for all species)
Housesitting (in your own home)
Equine care

Because we believe every animal, regardless of species, deserves compassionate, knowledgeable, high-quality care.

As professionals, we are dedicated not only to providing love and care, but also understanding each animal’s emotional and behavioural needs to support their wellbeing fully.

You don’t need to have a dog to be part of Hoof & Paws 🐾

Whether you have horses, cats, small animals, reptiles, birds, or anything in between, we’re here for you.

Get in touch to chat about how we can support you and your animals ❤️

This week we hit a milestone we’re incredibly proud of…

We’ve now supported over 100 dogs and owners through our Scent Scouts and Leash & Learn groups 🐾❤️

One of the most amazing things about our community is the variety of dogs and people we get to work with every session.
From puppies to older dogs.

Nervous rescues to over-excited adolescents.
Working breeds who need an outlet, to laid-back sofa companions finding their confidence.

Every dog comes with their own personality, emotions, challenges, and story.

And behind every dog is an owner who cares deeply about giving them the best life possible.

For some people, the goal is adventure, freedom, and reliable recall.

For others, it’s finally being able to enjoy a calmer walk without stress or tension.

Some are helping anxious dogs feel safer in the world.

Some are building focus, boundaries, and engagement.

Some simply want to understand their dog better and strengthen the bond they already have.

No matter the breed, behaviour, background, or training goals… what connects everyone in this community is the willingness to learn, support their dog, and keep showing up.

Watching people celebrate wins together, support each other through the hard days, and genuinely care about one another has become one of the most rewarding parts of this journey for us.

Because this community has become about so much more than dog training.
It’s about confidence.
Connection.
Trust.
Support.

And building a life alongside your dog that feels calmer, happier, and more enjoyable for both of you.

Thank you to every single person who has trusted us to be part of your journey so far ❤️

And if you’ve been thinking about getting support with your own dog, we’d love to welcome you too.

Send us a message with your dog’s name, age, and what you’re currently struggling with and we’ll help guide you towards the right next step and how you can get involved🐾
