Did you know a dog’s sense of smell is estimated to be between 1,000 and 10,000 times better than ours? 👃🏻

Dogs have over 100 million scent receptor sites inside their noses, compared to around 6 million in humans. Even more impressive, the part of a dog’s brain dedicated to analysing smells is around 40 times larger than the equivalent area in the human brain 🧠✨

This incredible sense of smell is why dogs are so amazing at tracking, detecting scents, and even identifying medical conditions!

🧬 Progesterone Testing at Elite Kennel Fertility 💉

Progesterone testing is one of the most accurate and reliable methods used to determine the optimal breeding window in the female.🐾

During the oestrus cycle, progesterone levels rise in response to ovulation. By measuring progesterone concentrations within the blood and comparing them to highly correlated ovulatory markers, we can accurately identify where your dog is within her cycle and determine the most fertile time for mating or insemination.

✨ Why is progesterone testing so important?
✔️ Accurately predicts ovulation timing
✔️ Maximises pregnancy success rates
✔️ Essential for chilled and frozen semen breedings
✔️ Helps determine the most optimal time for insemination
✔️ Reduces the risk of missed ovulation and unsuccessful matings

Correct timing is particularly important when using chilled or frozen semen, as s***m longevity differs significantly between semen types. Accurate progesterone testing allows insemination to occur during the female’s peak fertility period, helping to optimise conception rates 🐶

Our veterinary professionals take and process blood samples on site within our laboratory, with results typically available in approximately 2 hours ⏱️

Already had bloods taken at your own veterinary practice? Samples can also be brought directly to our laboratory or sent via the post.

📌 Please note: To receive same-day results, all blood samples must be collected or delivered to our laboratory by 14:30. Please note that clinical results are based on when the blood was drawn, not when the laboratory received it.

If you are planning an insemination with Elite Kennel Fertility, we kindly ask that you let us know as early as possible in your bitch's season, even if you are having progesterone testing carried out elsewhere.

If you are having progesterone testing performed elsewhere, it is important that testing is carried out using a reliable and accurate progesterone analyser. While we are happy to work alongside other veterinary practices and fertility clinics, the best outcomes are typically achieved when we are able to perform the progesterone testing ourselves, as this allows our team to monitor the results consistently throughout the season, accurately track hormonal progression, and determine the optimal breeding time with confidence.

Providing us with advance notice allows our team to prepare for your visit, monitor your timeline, and ensure we can schedule the appropriate staffing and resources when the time comes.

As a busy clinic, early notification also helps us prioritise your booking and allocate the necessary time within our schedule. We want to be able to provide our services to everyone who needs them, and advance planning allows us to accommodate clients as efficiently as possible.

This not only helps our clinic run smoothly, but also enables us to support you throughout the breeding process and maximise the chances of a successful insemination by following your bitch's progress closely.

We understand that plans can change, but keeping us informed from the beginning of the season helps us provide the highest standard of care and service for both you and your dogs. 🐾

🐾 AI vs TCI – What’s the Difference? 🧬

When it comes to canine insemination, there are different options available depending on the type of semen being used and the individual breeding plan. Two of the most common procedures are AI (Artificial Insemination) and TCI (Transcervical Insemination).

✨ AI (Artificial Insemination)
Also known as a va**nal insemination, AI mimics a natural mating whilst reducing stress and physical contact between the dogs.

During the procedure:
✔️ The semen is collected and quality assessed
✔️ The sample is processed in our laboratory
✔️ A catheter is placed into the reproductive tract via the va**na
✔️ The semen is then inseminated carefully into the bitch
AI can be used with fresh and chilled semen only 🐶

✨ TCI (Transcervical Insemination)
TCI is a more advanced insemination technique that can be used with fresh, chilled, and frozen semen ❄️

Using a rigid endoscope, the cervix is visualised and catheterised, allowing semen to be deposited directly into the uterus — as close to the eggs as possible.

✨ Benefits of TCI:
✔️ Only method used for frozen semen
✔️ Ideal for chilled or poorer-quality semen
✔️ No sedation used
✔️ Allows visualisation of the reproductive tract
✔️ Can help identify abnormalities and cycle stage

Because frozen semen has a shorter lifespan after thawing, TCI is the only method used to maximise pregnancy success rates ❤️

Looking to use a stud dog located elsewhere in the UK? Chilled semen allows breeders to access the stud they want without the stress of transporting either the stud dog or the female ❤️

At Elite Kennel Fertility Veterinary Practice, semen is carefully collected from the stud dog and fully assessed for quality before being processed using a specialist protein-based extender designed to increase the longevity of the sample.

The semen is then slowly cooled, securely packaged in a temperature-controlled shipping box, and sent safely to your chosen destination anywhere within the UK 📦🐶
