Commonly known as ‘eulalia,’ the miscanthus sinensis flamingo is a deciduous grass featuring graceful, elegant, arching green leaves up to 2cm wide. Throughout late summer, it produces feathery pink flower plumes that gradually fade to a silvery colour as autumn approaches.

Did you know...?

During the 1600s, the Netherlands was gripped by a speculative frenzy known as Tulip Mania, or Tulipomania. At its peak, tulip bulbs became so highly prized that they were worth more than gold! This economic bubble eventually burst, causing a significant crash in the Dutch economy.

Interestingly, cut tulips can continue to grow up to an inch per day.

A little taster of what goes on behind the scenes when you begin the garden design process with us.

After an initial visit and consultation, talented Andi, armed with your info, will get drawing – using his 30 years’ worth of experience to show how the current garden can be transformed into the perfect garden for you!

After listening to your requirements and ideas, absorbing and interpreting them, Andi will present them to you to get your feedback, and make any adjustments required.

Once the initial sketch is approved, Andi will take it to the next stage and create a 3D garden design using our special software. This computer-aided technology allows you to view your garden design in 3D, from multiple angles, thus giving a peek into the future as to how your new garden will look!

Find out more about the process by visiting www.andiwaygarden.design today!

It's

Did you know… Around 2,000 new plant species are discovered every year?!

Of the nearly 400,000 known species of vascular plants (ferns and flowering plants), new ones are discovered almost every day! It's likely that countless others will become extinct before they can be recorded or their potential value to humanity can be assessed.

Sometimes less is definitely more.

A bright and cheerful bloom, sunflowers are an iconic plant known for spreading summer joy and bringing vibrancy to any bouquet. Here are a few fascinating facts about the humble sunflower which you may find interesting!

A sunflower is composed of more than 1,000 separate flowers; the brown centre and yellow petals are classified as smaller plants of their own.

The tallest sunflower in the world was recorded in Germany and was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records in 2014, measuring 30 feet and 1 inch!

Young sunflowers use their internal biological clock to follow the sun across the sky. Their blooms turn from east to west during the day, then reset overnight. This process, called heliotropism, helps the plant grow. Once the sunflower is mature, it stops tracking the sun and stays facing east to attract bees and other pollinators.

Sunflowers can absorb toxins like heavy metals and radiation from the soil, a process called phytoremediation. After nuclear disasters like Chernobyl and Fukushima, millions of sunflowers were planted to help clean up the contaminated land. They have also been used in areas with high levels of lead to help restore the soil.

So, there you have it – not only are they beautiful, but they’re pretty useful too!

Sonny loves a pergola walk to sniff around on these hot days. They offer real drama to a space, lift scented plants high above the ground and obviously create that shade we so desperately crave on hot afternoons.

*PLANT OF THE MONTH: Hydrangea Paniculata (Pinky Winky)*

A popular deciduous plant, the Pinky Winky is a real showstopper, known for its large, cone-shaped flowers that change colour throughout the summer - starting white and turning to a deep, raspberry pink. These beautiful panicles are ideal for cut flowers, and add a beautiful two-tone effect to the garden.

With the warmer weather and sunnier days, it's safe to say that spring is well and truly on its way!

You may be tempted to get out in the garden and give the lawn its first mow of the year, so here are a few tips to ensure that your grass flourishes!

• For the first mow, you should mow high and lightly, taking off less than a third of the grass's height. You can gradually lower the mower's height over the next few weeks.

• Wait until the grass is dry and any frost has thawed.

• Avoid mowing in the evening, as the grass won't have enough time to recover before nightfall.

• Avoid mowing if the ground is too wet, as the weight of the mower can damage the grass.

Then, simply relax and enjoy the lighter, brighter days to come!
