🦠🦠 Strangles - the disease every horse owner dreads 🥲

The Equine Infectious Disease Surveillance (EIDS) network, which monitors cases of strangles in the UK has reported a significant rise in cases in 2025 compared to previous years. 📍

😷We are not aware of any active cases within mid Cornwall but the increased risk is a prompt reminder that we need to stay vigilant to keep our equines safe 🙏

🟢 now is the time to strengthen biosecurity and hygiene on yards

🟢 promptly report suspect cases and have them tested

🟢implement proper quarantine for new equines

🟢consider vaccination - we have managed to secure 2nd doses free of charge from the makers of Strangvac for all first doses administered before the end of November 2025.

📢Let’s break the taboo surrounding strangles and start talking 📢

By working together as a community we can hopefully minimise the number of cases in Cornwall and save everyone heart ache and stress. 🐴💔

💃💃💃 On Saturday night, some of the Duchy maids donned their glad rags for the annual Cornish Veterinary Association ball! 🥂💃🥂

A fabulous night was had by all, lots of dancing and catching up with colleagues from all over Cornwall.

☎️ The on call phone even behaved for Charlie!! 😜

🦷😬 when did your equine last have a dental checkup? 📆

We would always recommend a dental check at least every 12 months. 🩺

🍁🍂At this time of year, it’s particularly important to check older horses, ponies and donkeys to make sure they are comfortable and can eat forage well over the winter.

If you have any concerns that your horse, pony or donkey is losing weight ⚖️ chewing abnormally or quidding (dropping half chewed food balls) then it’s probably wise to get them checked sooner rather than later 🦷🐴

🦄She miraculously managed to get us all smiling with eyes open & mouths closed at the same time!!🤣
