Gorgeous boys Goose and Bodhi came to see us the is morning to register for our Healthy Pet Club and be microchipped! Microchipping is now a legal requirement in cats over 20 weeks old and one of the many benefits of our Healthy Pet Club.

Goose and Bodhi were very brave and took it all in their stride, having a good prowl around our consult room. 😻🐾🥰

With all this hot weather, PLEASE be careful with your dogs, especially the brachycephalics (short faced breeds such as bulldogs and pugs) and avoid walking them in the heat of the day! ☀️🥵🐕

We are so sad and sorry to hear the news of an English Bulldog being found dead, after suffering heatstroke. Brachycephalic animals (those with flat faces) are more at risk.

So how can we prevent this?

Ultimately, don't walk your dog in hot weather. But, if you are in this scary situation, what should you do?

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

Poor Mabel has been itchy for weeks! Her owner has been very dedicated, working with us through the process of diagnosing the problem. Itching often requires lifelong management rather than treat and cure and patience is needed to identify the underlying cause.

Please discuss any itching concerns with our vets or nurses, who will be happy to discuss a way forward for you and your pet.

Mabel was very brave and happy to start her medication to manage the underlying cause and stop her itching. 🥰 🐾

Meet the beautiful Patatina enjoying cuddles with us this afternoon after being spayed (volume up for purrs ☺️). All animals undergoing surgery have several different types of pain relief to ensure they wake up happy and comfortable 🥰.

Did you know that only 20% of ginger cats are female!!?? 🐈 🐾 ♥️

A member of the public brought this gorgeous young Fulmar in after being found on the beach. Fulmars are pelagic, meaning they spend most of their lives at sea, only coming to land to breed on cliffs. We are very lucky to have them in Newquay!!

This little one may have taken off from the nest a little too soon - notice the fluffy down feathers on his head and around his legs. He was assessed by one of our Exotics' vets and despite being quite thin, had no significant injuries. After rehydration and feeding, he will be going to Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital for rehabilitation.

Thank you to everyone who brings in wildife to us and to the rescue centres who take them on for rehabilitation! We will always do our best to save any animal that comes through our doors! 🦆🦉🐢🐍🦎🐈🐓🦜🐇🦔🐀🐕
