A moment for my own little (BIG) win.

This is my boy Koopa. He has been with me 4 months and struggles with both frustration based & fear based reactivity.
Tonight we went on a walk around our local nature reserve, somewhere he is familiar with & a space where we can gain enough distance from his triggers whilst still having opportunities to do some counter conditioning work.
It was a lot busier than I expected it to be which filled me with an initial dread that it was going to be a walk full of reactions.
Instead, I reminded myself that my own emotional state matters too. I kept myself calm, focused on supporting Koopa and gave him the space and choices he needed.
He managed an entire walk without reacting at all! 🥳
I won't pretend it was perfect & military focussed, nor would I expect that, but considering how many other dogs (& bikes!) we saw he did absolutely amazing & I'm so proud of him 🥰
Koopa is making such fantastic progress in his behavioural modification plan week by week.
These wins are the reminders of why I chose this path as a career 💙

Spent some time getting to know my new buddies Bælfyr & Bodhi this week, aren't they both gorgeous boys! 🥰💙

Let's talk about loose lead walking! 🐕‍🦺

Absolutely nobody wants to have their arms pulled from the socket by their dogs. But did you know, it’s a particularly tricky skill for our dogs to learn?
Naturally, they walk at a faster pace than us. Especially our larger dogs who have a wider gait. Some dogs are even bred to be powering off in front of us! When dogs catch a scent of something, it's completely natural for them to need to investigate it. It's how they process information in their environment and can lead to a calmer dog overall.

I took this video of my walking pal Jazzee whilst we were out walking a few weeks ago. We’ve been working hard on no pulling but I dropped the lead to allow her to do her own thing without restriction. Notice how quickly she got so far ahead of me that I couldn't have been holding on. This wasn't her trying to get away from me but simply her walking at her natural pace!

Loose lead walking is different to a competition style heel where our dog is glued to our side. In some scenarios, this skill may be necessary but for day to day walks, just learning to yield to leash pressure is enough for both dog and handler to enjoy the walk without building frustration on either end of the lead.

Like any new skill, loose lead walking requires practice, patience, consistency and understanding. Remember that your dog isn't trying to be difficult, they're simply behaving as a dog does. Working with our dogs means we can set them up to succeed.

🤩 Introducing... Kaizen Canine Wellbeing 🤩
I've been a little bit quiet recently as I've been working behind the scenes on an exciting rebrand!
Although I love dog walking and pet care, I wanted my business to better reflect my values and the way in which I support dogs.
Kaizen Canine Wellbeing focuses on a holistic approach & supporting the whole dog; mind, body & behaviour.
Canine behaviour is so much more than what we observe and sometimes label as 'problematic'. It is vital to understand the link between supporting emotional stability, gut health, nervous system regulation and enriching our dogs' lives, in ensuring overall wellbeing. In supporting all of these areas, we can help our dogs thrive in our increasingly busy lives.

As an APBC registered Associate Clinical Animal Behaviourist, you can be assured that my approach is always ethical, compassionate and force-free. Each and every walk, training plan and consultation is tailored to the individual needs of the dog and owner, offering practical & realistic support that works around your lifestyle.

I've chosen to stick with the brand name 'Kaizen' as it is a philosophy I believe can be effectively applied to our dogs' training & behaviour plans. Making small, incremental changes for continuous improvement.
There are no 'quick fixes' over here, only evidence-based support that is wholly focused on prioritising your dog's welfare.

My services currently include:

🐾Solo Dog Walking

🐾 Walk & Train

🐾 1:1 Wellbeing Consultations

You judged them in 20 seconds.
Twenty seconds.

A dog barking.
Lunges.
Growling.

Maybe you rolled your eyes.

Maybe you muttered to yourself "just train that dog"
Maybe you were just thankful your dog "isn't like that".

But here's the thing.

Sometimes it only takes one frightening experience, one painful injury, one dog attack or one life-changing event for everything to change.

What you didn't see?
The six months before those twenty seconds.

You didn't see the early mornings.
The planning and precision behind a “simple” walk.

The tears.
The self-doubt.
The hours dedicated to helping their dog feel safe again.

Sometimes the kindest thing you can do isn't offer advice.

It's simply to create space.

Because what looks like an "untrained dog" to you, may actually be one of the hardest moments in someone else's journey.

There is always more to the story.
And that criticism?

It stays with people far longer than those twenty seconds ever will.

Koopa is here to wish you all a Happy International Dachshund Day! 🥰
Tenacity, boldness, curiosity and playfulness all perfectly rolled into a sausage shape 🌭
Having always been a gundog kinda gal, I never thought I'd end up sharing my home with a little dog but he quickly became my best friend.
Anyone who has owned or worked with a dachshund will be familiar with what fantastic characters they are! They may be small but have mighty personalities, with very strong opinions 😆

Feel free to share your Dachshund pics in the comments! We would love to see them 🥰

Jazzee and I have been working on perfecting her recall so she can enjoy some more freedom on our walks. Shes absolutely smashing it 💪🏻
As you can tell by her choice to flip her ears inside out to prove how hard she is willing to listen 🤣

Cats can be finicky creatures but I do feel honoured when a cat that I've only visited a couple of times feels comfortable enough to come and sit on my knee for a cuddle 🥹

Jazzee encourages you to seize the day with the same level of commitment she seizes her ball 🤭
