At Knypersley Reservoir this week. 🌿💦

One interesting feature here is the smaller Serpentine Reservoir, shown in the second photo, which sits just above the main reservoir.

Built between 1781 and 1783, it formed part of the water supply for the local canal network and is a very early example of a canal-feeder reservoir.
Because it sits so close to Knypersley, it’s easy to walk past without realising that the Serpentine is actually the older of the two.

The larger Knypersley Reservoir came later, in the 1820s, as demand for water increased. Its construction wasn’t without problems, including persistent leakage, and Thomas Telford was brought in to investigate and improve the dam.

Another local landmark is Warder’s Tower, shown in the third photo and built in 1828. John Bateman had it constructed as a gamekeeper’s house and as a picturesque “eye-catcher” within the Knypersley Hall estate.

His son, James Bateman, later went on to create the famous gardens at Biddulph Grange.
