πŸͺ° Fly strike πŸͺ°

We know the warmer weather is lovely and some of our bunnies are enjoying it too!
But, with this warmer weather comes an increased risk of fly strike. 😒

🐰 All rabbits unfortunately are at risk of suffering from fly strike but some are at an increased risk such as the old arthritic bunnies and unwell bunnies.

❀️ Here are some tips to help which your bunny will appreciate;

🏠 Cleaning their living quarters more frequently in the warm weather.

πŸ’© Ensuring the rabbits are clean (mainly their bottoms).

β€οΈβ€πŸ©ΉKeep any wounds clean and dry.

πŸ₯¬ Offer a high fibre diet such as hay, foraging greens, grass (but not grass clippings) and herbs.

⬇️Reduce the amount of nuggets offered.

βš–οΈ Prevent obesity in bunnies. Bunnies become unable to groom themselves effectively especially reaching round to their bottoms which massively increases the risk of fly strike.

πŸ’Š Using Topical treatments such as Rearguard will help prevent fly strike.

βœ‚οΈ If needed, a sanitary bum clip will definitely help.

πŸ₯ Please book in with our nurses to do this if you're not able or comfortable doing this yourself…..it’s not an easy task!

☎️ If you would like any further advice please contact
one of our surgeries.

🐣 It's baby bird season! 🐣

Unfortunately in the past few weeks we have had a surge in fledgling birds being brought to our practice, largely due to perceived injuries with their wings. This is because whilst they are trying, they haven't quite got the knack of flying yet. 😒

⭐️ Here's some advice on helping these babies at this time........

βœ‹ When to leave a fledgling alone?
If you see it's well feathered, on the floor, screaming loudly, flapping with no visible injuries, their parents are nearby caring for them.
πŸ₯ It's best to leave their mothers to look after them as they do a better job at parenting than we do.

Please note, their parents may only visit them once or twice a day in some cases when they're learning to fly.

πŸˆβ€β¬› lf you are worried that animals may attack these fledglings, with gloves and wearing PPE place the bird in an elevated place in the same area you found it.
The parents will continue to care for it with reduced risk.

πŸ₯ When to bring a fledgling to us?
If there is a visible injury such as an open wound.

πŸ’• We appreciate the concern our clients have for wildlife so please seek wildlife specialist advise before removing them by contacting a wildlife specialist such as Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary.

πŸ’™ Keeping your pet up to date with flea and worm treatments is an important part of responsible pet care and helps keep them happy, healthy, and protected all year round ❀️

🦟 Fleas can cause serious problems
Fleas don’t just make pets itchy β€” they can lead to skin irritation, allergies, infections, and can even transmit tapeworms. Once fleas get into the home, they can spread very quickly!

πŸͺ± Worms can affect pets and people
Worms such as roundworms and tapeworms can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, and poor condition. Some worms can also be passed to humans, especially young children.

πŸ’Š Prevention is better than cure
Regular parasite treatments help prevent problems before they start, protecting your pet from discomfort and helping avoid more serious health issues later on.

πŸ“… Year-round protection is essential
Fleas and worms are not just a summer issue β€” pets can pick them up at any time of year, even if they spend most of their time indoors.

🐢🐱 Keeping pets healthy and comfortable
Routine parasite prevention is one of the simplest ways to support your pet’s long-term health and wellbeing.
☎️ If you’re unsure which flea and worm treatment is best for your pet, our team is always happy to help β€” please get in touch with us!😊
