โ ๐น๐ฐFlystrike Awareness ๐ฐ๐นโ
๐กAs temperatures rise, so does the risk of flystrike.
This is a potentially fatal condition which occurs when flies lay eggs on an animals fur, which then hatch into maggots and feed on their flesh. Whilst this commonly affects rabbits, it can affect any animal which has dirty fur, dirty rear ends, or open wounds.
Flystrike can happen in a matter of hours and can quickly lead to toxic shock and death, so it is crucial to be aware of prevention and treatment.
How Can We Prevent Flystrike โ
๐ฐSpot clean their living environment daily and fully clean at least once a week
๐ฐCheck their fur, especially around the tail area, for open wounds or dirt. It is best to do this twice daily, and if dirty, clean immediately with warm water and dry thoroughly - clip the fur if needed
๐ฐInsect proof outdoor housing, e.g. using netting over hutches
๐ฐNeutering - unneutered female rabbits may be at a higher risk of getting flystrike
๐จ If you suspect flystrike, seek veterinary advice immediately.
