☕️📖 Aside from today’s bookings, this is how I imagined today would look….
Chilling with a cuppa and a good book, enjoying a bit of peace and quiet after a great summer spent with my three children 🌞

However, that wasn’t meant to be after sickness hit hard yesterday!

So instead of enjoying my quiet cuppa and book, I’m spending today looking after recovering children, catching up on the washing and wondering where the summer holiday went 🤦🏻‍♀️

In dog behaviour, we often talk about a dog being “over threshold”. Something that isn’t one fixed point and it doesn’t look the same for every dog.

Put simply, a dog reaches threshold when what they are experiencing is getting too much for their current capacity to cope, respond or learn.

But we need to know the emotions behind it and not just deem them over threshold because of their behaviour. I’ve used the emotional and arousal circumplex here because it helps us look at two different parts of a dog’s experience:

• Emotional Valence — whether the emotion feels pleasant or unpleasant
• Arousal — the level of activation or intensity within that emotion

Dogs experiencing unpleasant, high-arousal emotions such as fear, distress or frustration may be more likely to go over threshold (the red area top left). This might look like barking, lunging, pulling, frantic movement or being completely unable to interact with their owner or handler.

But high arousal isn’t automatically negative. A dog can be excited, playful and at high arousal while still having enough capacity to respond, make choices and learn the yellow to green area top right). Equally, a dog does not have to be highly aroused to be over threshold.

Low-arousal states can also reflect a dog who is no longer coping (bottom left red area). Withdrawal, stillness, showong to be shutdown can easily be mistaken for calmness—particularly when the dog is quiet, compliant or no longer reacting.

(*The colour grading is my interpretation to help illustrate the point)

This is why we need to understand not only what being over threshold looks like, but what it might feel like for the dog.

Behaviour is only the part we can see. Emotion, arousal and the dog’s remaining capacity help us understand what may be happening underneath it.

☀️THROWBACK TO THE HEATWAVE! ☀️

When the temperatures were soaring, we made the most of the cooler mornings with an early start for Betty! 🐶

This session was all about observing Betty’s interactions with another canine companion. I oversaw their time together, carefully assessing Betty’s play style, communication and body language, while giving her family pointers on how to approach future dog interactions.

It’s so important to remember that successful dog interactions aren’t just about whether dogs play — it’s about understanding how they communicate, when to step in and how to set them up for positive experiences. 🐾

IS YOUR DOG DRIVING YOU ROUND THE BEND? 🐾🤯

You love them… but sometimes you’re wondering if they’re secretly plotting against you! 😂

🫟 Destroying the house the second you leave?
👀 Constantly demanding your attention?
🐕 Dragging you down the street instead of walking nicely?
🙉 Selectively deaf when you call them?
🚪 Going absolutely WILD when visitors arrive?
😩 Or have your walks become more stressful than enjoyable?

You’re not alone — and you don’t have to just put up with it!

At Mutt in a Rutt, I help you understand why your dog is behaving the way they are and more importantly, give you practical strategies that actually fit into everyday life.

🥵 The heat is back… and unfortunately, so are the appointment rearrangements!

With another surge in temperatures, more consultations are needing to be rearranged. This weather is proving to be an absolute nightmare when trying to run a dog business! 🐶☀️

I know constantly having appointments moved can be frustrating and inconvenient and I can only apologise for any disruption this causes. Unfortunately, when the temperatures rise, the welfare of the dogs has to come first. ❤️

I really appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding though and hopefully normal service will resume very soon! 🤞🏻

Thank you for bearing with me! 🐾

Meet Chester 🐾

Chester’s family got in touch after their once well-behaved puppy suddenly seemed to have forgotten everything he’d been taught. Everyday life had become much more challenging as new behaviours started to appear.

It quickly became clear that Chester had entered the adolescent stage—a completely normal part of a dog’s development but one that can certainly test your patience!

We went right back to basics, keeping training sessions short, fun and rewarding. Alongside this, we’ve been increasing the amount of appropriate mental and physical stimulation he’s getting, teaching him how to settle and managing his attention-seeking behaviours.

At our follow-up appointment, Chester showed a huge improvement from the first time I met him. While we’ll continue building on his progress as he matures, he’s already proving what a little superstar he is! ⭐️🐶

Adolescence can feel like you’ve taken ten steps backwards but with consistency, patience and the right guidance, your teenage pup will come through the other side.

🥵🐾 The high temperatures may have gone… but the backlog hasn’t! 🐾🥵

After playing a game of “Will it be too hot to train today?” for what felt like forever, I’m now working my way through all the appointments that had to be rearranged.

If you’re waiting to hear from me, thank you for your patience. I promise i haven’t forgotten about you—i’m just trying to play catch up!

P.S. Kev is currently taking a break from his very demanding role of professional sunbather ☀️😂
