Sniff, sniff, sniff! 🐕✨

One of the best cues we can teach our dogs is “Find it!” ⭐

Following on from my previous post about enrichment, once your dog understands how to search for things at home, you can start using this game on your walks too! 🐾

The benefits are huge. Not only does it mentally tire them out, but it also provides fantastic enrichment, helps redirect their attention away from distractions, and gives you both a chance to slow the pace down and enjoy your walk together.

When a dog’s brain is in “search mode,” it can’t be in “high alert mode” at the same time. So if your dog is reactive on walks, this game can help shift their focus onto something positive 🦴 — instead of scanning for danger, they’ll be searching for their treat! 🐶

Be creative! Use whatever safe features you have around you to hide treats. Tree trunks, gates, benches, or even long grass are perfect for a fun game of search and find.

If you’re walking alone, simply secure your dog safely to a post, bench, gate, or tree (or ask for a sit and wait if they’re able), hide the treats, then release them with an enthusiastic “Go find it!”

Give it a try and have fun! 🤩🐾

👉How can we give our dogs enrichment and why does it even matter?

Many people think that if they take their dog for long walks several times a day that they are meeting their dogs needs and will have a tired, contented and happy dog.🤔 But they often just end up with a dog that’s over-stimulated and unable to settle.🦮

Just like humans, dogs need mental stimulation as well as physical exercise. Walking is definitely one way to enrich their lives but there are so many other ways we can provide enrichment without even leaving the house! 🧠

✨Enrichment relieves anxiety, boredom and frustration. It can strengthen their problem solving skills and help prevent destructive behaviours.

There are many ways we can offer enrichment for our dogs-but one of the best ways is to let them use their incredibly powerful noses to search for food.🔎

✨Here is just one idea using a selection of their toys, bowls, licki mats, snuffle mats and any bits of recycling like empty milk cartons or toilet roll tubes. Simply lay it all out on the floor and hide some of their treats in and amongst it. Invite them to search out the treats using a ‘find it’ cue and watch them enjoy using their nose to find them.

Follow me for lots more ideas to enrich your dogs lives and keep their minds active and healthy.🐶🐾
