🐶🎆BONFIRE NIGHT: HOW TO PREPARE YOUR DOG🎆🐶

Bonfire Night can be stressful for our four-legged friends, but a little preparation throughout the day can help make the evening more comfortable! 🐾💗

🏃‍♀️Enjoy an earlier, longer walk – Take your dog for a good daytime walk while it’s still light, allowing plenty of time for sniffing and exploring. Avoid over-exercising them.

🧩Keep them mentally stimulated – Offer enrichment toys, snuffle mats, puzzle feeders or a stuffed Kong to keep their minds occupied.

🍽️ Feed dinner a little earlier – Offer their evening meal before fireworks are likely to start, particularly if your dog becomes too anxious to eat.

🚽 Plan toilet breaks – Give your dog a final opportunity to go outside before dark and before fireworks begin. Keep them on a lead, even in your garden, if fireworks are nearby.

✨ **Remember:** Never force your dog to go outside during fireworks or leave them alone if they are very distressed.

🐾 WHAT IS DESENSITISATION? 🎆

Desensitisation is a gradual training process that helps dogs become more comfortable with sounds they find frightening.

By starting at a very low volume and slowly increasing it, while rewarding calm behaviour with treats and praise, we can help build confidence and reduce anxiety. ❤️

🍫 Chocolate– Toxic to dogs and cats.

🍬 Sugar-free sweets & gum – May contain xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs.

🍇 Grapes & raisins – Can cause serious kidney damage in dogs.

🍬Sweet wrappers– Can cause choking or intestinal blockages.

🎃 Mouldy pumpkins – Can contain harmful toxins.

🕯️Candles – Risk of burns and fires.

Fireworks can be frightening for our canine companions! 💕 Here are some simple ways to help keep your dog calm and comfortable this Bonfire Night.

🌿 Consider calming support – Dog-appeasing pheromone products may help your dog feel more secure. Consider using a diffuser in their favourite room a few weeks beforehand.

🐾 Our top tips:

🏠 Keep them indoors – Walk your dog before dark and keep them safely inside during fireworks.

🪟 Close windows and curtains – Help reduce noise and flashes of light.

🎶 Create a calm environment – Play the TV or radio at a comfortable volume to help mask sudden bangs.

🛏️ Provide a safe space – Create a cosy den with familiar blankets and bedding where your dog can retreat.

🦮 Keep walks safe – Keep dogs on a lead outdoors, even in familiar areas, as fireworks can cause them to bolt. Ensure their microchip details are up to date.

🍗 Maintain their routine – Keep feeding times familiar and provide fresh water and opportunities for toilet breaks.
