If you ask your dog to do something and they don't do it, the reason is usually one (or more) of three things:

• They don't understand.
• They're not motivated.
• They're scared.

One of the biggest mistakes dog owners make is assuming that because their dog can Sit in the kitchen, they should automatically Sit everywhere else.

But dogs don't learn that way.

When you change the environment, you change the lesson.

The sights, sounds, smells, people, dogs, squirrels, bicycles, and distractions outside can make a familiar cue feel completely unfamiliar. To your dog, it's almost like you're speaking a different language.

So when your dog ignores a cue outdoors, don't assume they're blowing you off.

Assume they need help.

Slow down.
Be patient.
Use food if necessary.
Go back to hand signals if needed.
Make the exercise easier.
Help your dog succeed.

Then gradually build back up to verbal control as your dog becomes more comfortable and confident in that environment.

If you want your dog to listen everywhere, you have to practice everywhere.

Different streets.
Different parks.
Different distractions.
Different situations.

Eventually your dog learns that "Sit" means "Sit" no matter where they are or what's happening around them.

Three beautiful girlies, each wonderful in their own way, learning how to navigate life together a little more peacefully 💕🐾

Today was all about helping them build stronger, happier relationships with one another. We worked through a variety of gentle strategies to encourage understanding, reduce tension, and create more positive experiences together.

Watching dogs grow in confidence and learn to feel more comfortable around each other is always so rewarding. 💖

Aren’t they just the sweetest trio? 🥰🐶🐶🐶

This is gorgeous Astro! During our session, we covered the importance of both physical and mental enrichment, as well as techniques such as counter-conditioning and systematic desensitisation, along with plenty of other training strategies.
These exercises will help Astro feel more relaxed and confident around the triggers that currently worry him, allowing him to navigate the world with greater ease.
A fantastic first session and lots of progress ahead. Well done, Astro! ⭐🐶

Today, beautiful Daisy continued her impulse control training while learning important boundaries in the garden. These exercises are helping her develop patience and calm behaviour when garden gates and the front door are opened — an essential skill for both safety and good manners.

This handsome boy Ruben absolutely smashed his 4th training session with increased difficulty. He responded really well to recall and focus training whilst having many other dogs around. Well done Ruben 🥰👏🏻🐶!

Gorgeous boy Buddy was having his first consultation. We covered mental stimulation, focus training, counter conditioning, systematic desensitisation, to help him to be more social and gain friends in the future ☺️🐶🥰.
