We had Yorkshire Day Yesterday.
As always a charity raffle, I would like thank everyone as our little group raised £540 for St. Leonard’s hospice York.
It was a good day, the usual fun rivalry, but yesterday meant so much more as recently we lost one of WGA’s own Adrian. Adrian was Mr Yorkshire Day, on our first one last year he led his team to victory, but he made the the day fun for everyone who attended, with his wonderful fun loving character and wicked wit 😂. Adrian never left anyone out and was generous with all and helped anyone in anyway he could.
He fought bravely over the last few years undergoing surgery and rounds and rounds of chemotherapy. Throughout this he always saw the funny side in life, never stopped coming training and successfully competing, pouring everything he had into his passions. To honour this special man we had a Yorkshire Day Trophy made, a quaich seemed appropriate with all of its meaning. It will be awarded every year, he will be part of WGA forever looking out on the hillside and the countryside he loved so much. A proud Yorkshire man and dear friend who will never be forgotten.

Three more puppies today, first up was the wonderful ( and seriously cute😂) pocket rocket 14 week old working cocker spaniel Mayday, who is training to be a future working gundog. Next was 6 month old Labrador Pepper, who had a great session on calmness/ steadiness and off lead heel work. Last of today’s 121s was 10 month old Freddie the flat coat retriever, who had his first introduction to place boards. Well done all. Now to finish the day getting my own dogs out, fed and settled before teaching the two evenings classes.

July Test done. Congratulations to the award winners (the points league is going to be close 😮). Well done to everyone, it was close scores all round 👏👏👏.

The lovely Golden Retriever pup kipper, came for her lesson today.
A great little session, Toni has got lots of homework to keep it all going. No photographs unfortunately but also had Effie with Pepper her Labrador pup working on heelwork/positioning; young dogs need to build up strength, balance and control of where their body and legs go 🙂 and Rachel with Bruce cocker ( flying Bruce as he is now known 😂😂), did a grand job once we had built up his steadiness. For a young keen dog learning to control your impulses takes time and consistency. Well done all 👏👏👏

Another day, another puppy, another future working gundog, that is also a much loved member of the family. Meet Ralph, a gorgeous English Springer Spaniel. This one can really hunt and will definitely keep everyone on their toes until he’s trained 😂. All that power and potential, Love him.

Another new starter, Flat coat retriever Diesel. Diesel is going to be a big lad when he grows up 😂. He made a good start today and went home to have a good sleep and dream about having fun training and his future picking up.

Lots going on.
Some cracking new pups on the books, where it all begins, foundations to set. Challenges for older dogs, season approaching, steadiness, distractions, stops, tuning in those ears can sometimes be a challenge 🙂. In training many move on to more advanced exercises too soon (to be honest it is easy to be guilty of pushing on especially with a talented young dog) which means I see many dogs and handlers that have to go back a step and retrain weak areas, this can take much longer and can be more challenging and time consuming than taking time when training an exercise the first time around and perfecting before moving on. It’s rarely impossible to re-train something, but it does take time and patience.
Consistent, clear, communication leads to confidence - confidence for your dog to believe in you and what you’re asking, confidence for you to trust your dog. Sometimes training can be monotonous but always worthwhile. There’s no quick fix, just good training.

Yesterday Saffy Sprocker became a TV celebrity making an appearance swimming on Look North, showing how she keeps herself cool in this heat wave. The farm water trough was her choice, she said she didn’t need to attend a water training day 🐶😂😂. Saffy is the star dog on the farm, in between attending training, competing in the scurries, working in the shooting season, she spends many hours spraying, combining and travelling around in “her”pickup, oh yes and climbing trees😂😂 ( Saffy has a better life than me, she’s never in😂).
Wonder what she’ll do next. So photogenic and she is always such a happy little dog with smiley face.
