Confidence in your own ability as a handler can change everything.
Easier said than done? Absolutely. But building confidence will improve performance more than almost any training tip I could give.
One of the biggest struggles I see in scent work is handlers constantly comparing themselves to others. The moment your focus becomes “being as good as someone else,” you lose sight of your own progress.
Because what happens when you finally reach that level?
You reach a ceiling but we want to burst through it!
Instead, focus on improving yourself.
Develop your own handling skills. Strengthen the relationship with your dog. Learn to better understand the dog in front of you and how you work together as a team.
That connection, trust, and understanding is what creates confident, effective searches.
Your dog doesn’t care what another team is doing.
They need you present, observant, and working with them.
The dog’s nose knows best.
Focus on what matters! The dog in front of you.
