We were asked yesterday what the difference was between Dengie Hi-Fi Lite £14.95 and Dengie Hi-Fi Molasses Free £18.85 was?

Key Differences
Calorie / Energy Content
Hi-Fi Lite: ~ 7.5 MJ/kg.
Hi-Fi Molasses Free: ~ 8.5 MJ/kg.
→ So, Molasses-Free has more energy (calories) per kg than Lite.
Sugar and Starch
Lite: 7% sugar, 1.5% starch.

Molasses Free: naturally occurring sugar ~2.5%, starch 1.5%.
→ Molasses Free is significantly lower in sugar.

Coating / Ingredients
Lite: chopped straw + alfalfa, light molasses coating.
Molasses Free: chopped and pelleted alfalfa + straw, rapeseed oil coating, plus mint & fenugreek for palatability.
→ Molasses Free uses oil instead of molasses, and has pellets + herbs.

Chew-Time / Texture
Lite: Pellet-free, so more chew time per scoop.
Molasses Free: has pellets, so different texture, likely less chew time per kg than Lite.
→ If chew-time (keeping the horse occupied) is a priority, Lite may be better.

Use as Forage Replacement
Lite: can be used as total or partial forage replacer.
Molasses Free: only as a partial forage replacer. According to Dengie’s guidance, because of the higher energy (from oil) and pellet content, it's less ideal to fully replace forage with it.

Intended Use / Target Horse
Lite: for “good do-ers,” overweight horses, light work, laminitis-prone.
Molasses Free: also for laminitis-prone or good do-ers, but probably when you want a low-sugar feed but still want a bit more energy.

Palatability
Lite’s molasses gives a little sweetness, which may help with fussy eaters or hiding supplements.
Molasses Free uses mint & fenugreek + oil — Dengie notes that the oil coating is not as palatable as molasses, but the herbs (mint/fenugreek) help.

Horse Wormer Protocol; sadly we are not allowed to sell horse wormers on the say of “my Vet says my horse should be wormed with Brand X’ . Vets can prescribe wormers for you, but we need the written prescription for our records. Blanket yard treatments are definitely not the way to go either, so “Our yard is using Brand Y this winter’ isn't ideal. The good news is our SQP can prescribe form our counter after a brief conversation. We have the latest information on the new threat of Large Redworms and fortunately cost effective treatments are available.
