PLEASE SHARE. WE NEED TO GET THIS LITTLE GIRL OUT OF RESCUE AND ONTO HER FOREVER SOFA
We don't normally share dogs looking for homes but this little girl is special.
Poppy is a pretty tri-coloured, Staffy girl of about one year old and the perfect size for most homes
We have recently discovered that this dear little soul is very much in need of a truly special home. When she arrived at the Rescue it became clear that she had some health problems – not severe; but there was something about her gait, her awareness of the space around her and her general sight that gave cause for concern. She underwent a series of tests.
In the meantime she has proved to be such a little bundle of joy – her tail wags continuously, she is always pleased to see everyone - she has a lovely disposition for such a young dog. She also has an abundance of affection, can sit on command and has a good recall response.
Sadly when the tests came back we learnt that Poppy has a rare genetic disease called L2HGA. It is an uncommon but debilitating neurological disease that affects Staffys and some other breeds – it is not widely known about. Although she is displaying some of the symptoms, like wobbly walking and some mood swings she is otherwise fit and healthy. At present the problem does not affect her lifestyle, she walks well on the lead, is happy in the car (she can jump in and out unaided) and enjoys the company of other dogs at play time. She sometimes finds it hard to focus on what is put in-front of her and can falter moving up and down steps.
It is also possible to control the disease with steroids and vitamins – but it cannot be eradicated. What we have learnt is that Poppy needs a very calm household, with a good steady routine. There may be value in limiting exercise to lead walks – something purposeful but not overly energetic or boisterous.
For all these reasons we think it best that she is rehomed in a child-free environment and as an only dog – although the right kind of furry friend might well be beneficial – something we could explore. The sad fact is that she may experience great anxiety at times and this will make her unpredictable so whilst she isn’t in naturally aggressive she is likely to lash out in fear and we have seen some evidence of this.
The truth is, we don’t know what the future holds for her – she may have a short life, and it’s therefore so important that we find her a safe and happy home just a soon as we can – her quality of life now is paramount We are really looking for a special kind of home that is prepared to take her on with her ‘disability’ and love her just the same
If you think you could offer Poppy the love and protection that she needs, please do call us and we can discuss the best way forward for this wonderful little soul. Poppy has been spayed and is fully up-to-date with her vaccinations.
She is a firm favourite with the volunteers and is by far the happiest we know!
