We encourage you to have your say by commenting on our social media posts. We won’t censor comments - even if they are critical of Northern Roots. However, we do have a few rules everyone must follow and will remove posts that don't meet these standards. Monitoring

Although we try to manage the content our social media channels inside office hours, we can't moni

tor posts 100% of the time. We will remove any content that doesn't fit within our guidelines as soon as we see it. Respecting others

Bullying of any kind will not be tolerated. Anyone making abusive, discriminatory or offensive comments will have them removed and they will be blocked from posting on our channels. Please note any comments implying discrimination will also be removed. No trolling

Where posts or comments are off-topic, insulting or use threatening remarks to upset another user, group of users, or Northern Roots employees and volunteers, they will be removed, and users will be banned from commenting. Strictly no swearing

While you may be passionate about subjects we post about, swearing and offensive language will not be tolerated. Any swearing or offensive language will be removed completely and any repeat offenders will be blocked. Blocking of users

2026 is going to be an exciting year for Northern Roots!

This year we open the doors to our beautiful new Visitor Centre and welcome you in.

Situated on the edge of woodland, looking out over four acres of Urban Farm, inspiring children’s play facilities, and the foothills of the Peak District, the Visitor Centre incudes a cafe, shop, multi-functional spaces, prayer room and a production kitchen.

A place for community, nature, creativity, enterprise, learning, food, fun and connection🤝

A milestone moment in a long-term, evolving project.

Over the coming years, as funding permits, we plan to create outdoor play facilities, cycle and equestrian routes, further learning and performance spaces, and a swimming pond.

2025 has been a year of tremendous growth for Northern Roots!

Hear from our team about how we’ve supported the environment, created jobs and opportunities for local people, used nature to improve wellbeing, and started work on a beautiful new Visitor Centre in partnership with I love Oldham.

Whether you’ve had fun at our events, engaged with our social content, collaborated with us on projects, or helped fund our vision, we’re incredibly grateful for your support.

Using nature-based activities to provide connection, community and support for people in their recovery journey.

We've had the privilege of getting to know and work with some incredible people, seeing them flourish, and become a valued part of the Northern Roots community.

✨️What a magical day for a festive gathering on the Urban Farm! What a lovely community we have built at Northern Roots.

From volunteers, Natural Health Service participants, artists, architects, and Community Champions, to students, community groups, Councillors, ecologists and educators, thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate a brilliant and busy year at Northern Roots. Thank you for being part of the journey, for your support, and for helping to bring Northern Roots to life👏

In 2026 Northern Roots will open a Visitor Centre with café, shop, production kitchen and more, plus a Forestry Skills Centre and four more acres of Urban Farm. Whilst Northern Roots will always be a long-term, evolving project, community and connection will always be at the heart of its ethos.

“I’d been blacksmithing for a long time, and then I thought, why don't I set up a business at Northern Roots, so I applied to the Northern Roots Enterprise scheme. Northern Roots is one of the only places that would allow me to be on site, which gives me enough opportunity to get set up and start earning money. Meet Joe, an Oldhamer, self-taught blacksmith, owner of Yggdrasil Forge and a Northern Roots based business.

Blacksmithing is a traditional heritage skill dating back to the Bronze Age, and Joe is keeping the craft alive right here at by sharing his passion with the public.
