β˜€οΈπŸ΄ SUN SAFETY FOR HORSES & RIDERS πŸ΄β˜€οΈ

With temperatures rising and UV levels increasing, it's important to protect both yourself and your horse when spending time outdoors.

🌞 For Riders: βœ… Wear a correctly fitted riding hat and UV-protective sunglasses where appropriate. βœ… Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen with at least 4-star UVA protection and reapply regularly. βœ… Wear lightweight, long-sleeved clothing to protect your skin. βœ… Drink plenty of water before, during and after riding. βœ… Try to avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm).

🐴 For Horses: βœ… Ensure constant access to fresh, clean water. βœ… Provide shade and shelter from direct sunlight. βœ… Ride during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening. βœ… Hose down with cool water and scrape excess water away to aid cooling. βœ… Watch for signs of heat stress, including excessive sweating, rapid breathing, lethargy, weakness or reluctance to move. βœ… Protect pink-skinned areas with equine-safe sun protection if needed.

⚠️ Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion For both horses and humans, symptoms can include dizziness, weakness, excessive sweating, headache, confusion, rapid breathing and dehydration. If you are concerned, stop activity immediately, move to a cool area and seek appropriate medical or veterinary advice.

πŸ’§ Remember: Hydration, shade and sensible planning are key to enjoying the summer safely.

Stay cool, stay protected and enjoy your time with your horses. ❀️🐴
