JOIN US FOR THE BARRY WAGGY WALK🐶

Join us in the New Year for a fun afternoon of tail wagging walkies. Enjoy a scenic three mile circular walk, breathtaking clifftop views, and sandy Jackson’s Bay.

📍 Where: Whitmore Bay, Barry Island (by the colourful beach huts)
📅 When: Sunday, 11th January
🕐 Registration: 1 PM | Walk starts: 2 PM
🐶 Cost: £8 per dog

We'll also have our much-loved stalls, featuring Handmade by Hope, Doggy Deli, Hope Rescue merchandise and our staff will be on hand to tell you all about the important work we do, what's on, fostering and adoption.

A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR SHOEBOX ELVES 🐾🎄

This year’s Shoebox Appeal has once again shown us just how incredible our Hope Rescue community is. Every box packed, every treat selected, and every cosy blanket tucked inside came from people who believe our dogs deserve comfort and love, especially during the festive season.

Your generosity has filled our kennels with toys, softer beds, and plenty of excitement for the dogs who need it most.

URGENT TLC REQUIRED FOR 12 YEAR OLD BICHON FRISE, ETHEL 💔

Ethel is a sweet 12 year old Bichon Frise who was found straying locally. From the moment she arrived, it was clear she needed some TLC. She went straight to the vet for a thorough checkup and, once she felt a little more settled, enjoyed a much needed groom.

At her age, Ethel faces a few health challenges. She has cataracts in both eyes and very limited vision, and she’s lost all her teeth - though that certainly hasn’t slowed down her appetite!

Thanks to the incredible support of our community, Ethel is getting the care she deserves. She’s stolen the hearts of our team and is now safe and loved in a foster home.

But stories like Ethel’s come at a cost. Hope Rescue’s vet bills now exceed £300,000 every year. This winter, we’re doing everything we can to help as many dogs as possible, but our resources are stretched to the limit.

Our beloved veteran foster carer, and all-round superstar, Pauline is back on your screens for the festive edition of Tails from the Shelter! 🐾

You might remember Pauline from the heartwarming finale of Tails, when she welcomed Snowy, a foster dog, into her home. This time, she’s spreading even more cheer - armed with boiled potatoes and gravy to serve up Christmas dinner for all the dogs at Hope!

HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT ON ANIMAL WELFARE REFORMS

We are delighted this morning to see the launch of the Government's new Animal Welfare Strategy for England which sets out new plans to protect pets, wildlife and farmed animals.

The Strategy proposals include:

🐾 Reforming dog breeding practices to improve health and welfare and ending puppy farming
🐾 Consulting on a ban on the use of electric shock collars
🐾 Considering the introduction of licensing for animal rescue organisations
🐾 Promoting responsible dog ownership to protect public safety

As always, the devil will be in the detail, but we are hugely encouraged by this positive action which addresses many of the issues and challenges we face as a a charity and have actively campaigned on over the last few years. We look forward to continuing to engage with decision makers and responding to the consultations, and ensuring that where already not in place, that Wales also embraces the reforms. Dogs like little Olwen, rescued from a puppy farm by Puppy Love and Hope Rescue, are depending on it.

DOG OF THE WEEK - TOFFEE APPLE! 🍎

This sweet girl is guaranteed to make someone very happy! She might be a little shy at first, but offer her a treat or a toy and she’ll soon melt right into your lap. 🥰

Toffee absolutely loves cuddles and will lean into you with all her weight, determined to give you as much love as possible! She’s playful, goofy, and adores running around our paddocks - spending time with her is guaranteed to brighten your day.

That’s why Toffee Apple is our Dog of the Week! 🏅 Her infectious happy vibes have been spreading joy to our staff and volunteers since the day she arrived, and she deserves some extra recognition for making everyone smile!

This super special girl is ready for her forever home. If you’ve got room in your heart (and on your sofa!) for a lovable, goofy Rottie, we’d love to hear from you! ❤️

We’re in need of new clippers! ✂️

As a predominantly stray-based kennels, we often see dogs arrive in heartbreaking condition. Many of you will remember Mary-Kate and Ashley, who came into our care around this time last year with severe matting all over their bodies. A much-needed shave gave them incredible relief, and this is true for so many dogs who come through our doors.
