โ๏ธ Beat the Heat: Keeping Your Pup Cool This Summer! ๐ถ๐พ
With the temperatures rising, our furry friends need a little extra love and care to stay safe, happy, and cool. Unlike us, dogs canโt sweat it out, so itโs up to us to protect them from the heat!
Here are our top tips for handling a heatwave like a pro:
๐ฆฎ 1. Protect those paws!
If the pavement is too hot for the back of your hand to rest comfortably for 7 seconds, itโs too hot for your dog's paws. Stick to early morning or late evening walks when the ground has cooled down.
๐ง 2. Hydration, hydration, hydration
Keep fresh, cool water available at all times. You can even drop a few ice cubes in their bowl or freeze some low-sodium doggy bone broth for a refreshing icy treat!
๐ 3. Create a cool oasis
Keep curtains closed during the day to block out the sun. Set up fans or a cooling mat in their favorite lounging spots. Never leave your dog in a conservatory, greenhouse, or carโeven for a minute.
๐ 4. The right kind of cool-down
A lukewarm or cool bath (just like the pup in our logo!) or a damp towel gently wiped over their tummy and paws can work wonders. Avoid freezing cold water, as shocking their system can actually make it harder for them to cool down.
โ๏ธ 5. Maintain that coat
Itโs tempting to shave long-haired dogs in the summer, but their coats actually act as insulation against both heat and sunburn! Regular brushing to remove trapped undercoat is the absolute best way to help them stay cool.
๐จ Signs of Heatstroke to Watch For:
Heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, bright red gums, or vomiting. If you suspect heatstroke, move them to a cool area, apply cool (not freezing) water, and call your vet immediately. Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine safely, everyone! โค๏ธ
