As the nights draw in and Bonfire Night approaches, you may start to notice a change in your horseโ€™s behaviour. If you horse or pony tends to get fizzy or anxious this time of year, you are definitely not alone โ€“ but did you know their feed could be playing a role?

- Keep intakes of starch and sugar to a minimum โ€“ these are rapidly broken down in the horseโ€™s digestive system, releasing energy quickly and increasing excitable temperaments.

- Think fibre first and try to avoid cereal grains โ€“ these are the biggest source of starch in many horse feeds.

- The most abundant source of sugar in the horseโ€™s diet is grass. Smaller additions like molasses are often blamed for fizzy behaviour, but fresh spring grass consumed in large amounts can have a far greater impact on your horseโ€™s energy levels.

- Feed isnโ€™t always to blame for fizzy behaviour, other possible causes can include pain or discomfort, weather conditions, stress, limited exercise or prolonged stabling
