How to keep a 3 year old and a spaniel busy at the beach.

One hide the kong, one find the kong and a bit of paddling and snacks in between.

Also, how do you get the same 3 year old to do a couple of days of school...promise a beach trip on a Thursday 😆

6.30pm class - It looks like this evening there's a little gap in the weather, so I'm hoping for an outdoor session. Just remember your wellies and coat for a bit of drizzle.

Scentwork
A little video of Pip searching for a kong. It's so interesting to watch her find the scent, discovering that it was elevated and her working through to find it.
Just watch her body language and how much she enjoys searching 🤩.
Next, we are focusing on reducing the kong size and building up the indication, but ultimately, it is a fun game together.

Working breed dogs are born naturally wanting to work. Having an off switch is a learnt behaviour, and one we need to include in our dog training.
After the dreadful winter, we have had 🌧🌧🌧 these skills may need a little fine tuning again outdoors as many of us didn't sit around in the pouring rain watching the world go by.

Pip is staying with us for a few days, so she is coming along and joining in.
Here is Pip learning that she doesn't get to go everywhere with everyone. She watched child no 1 go into drama and then sat next to the bench whilst child no. 2 had some snacks. This is high difficulty for Pip, who can struggle with an off switch. The class is only 30 minutes so it's perfect to get them skills practised.
Start seeing your everyday activities as small training opportunities, and the results will start shining through.
A few examples of short and sweet exercises are
*whilst one of you goes to the shop
*picking the kids up from a friend's house
*whilst they practise on their bikes
* At the end of a walk, spend some time in the car park, dont just jump in the car and leave

Today's training walk with Theo and Pip.

They had a great stimulating walk full of sniffs and adventure, with a sprinkling of training.

When the scents got too much and they were considering going off free hunting, we put them back on a lead and regained their focus by asking for behaviours they can easily achieve.
Then we asked some more difficult questions and focused on heel work, striving towards being able to achieve heel work in different distracting environments.
When their focus was back with us, they were back off lead practising recall, stop, distance sits, checking in, and just being great dogs 🐕🤩
We put them on the lead at different points of the walk, ensuring they don't associate the lead with the ending of fun.

Great skill from our puppy classes showing great impulse control using toys.
A sit and stay with movement, the toy was dropped, and then she was released to go get the toy. She got the ultimate prize, tuggy with the toy.

Thursdays 6.30pm pay as you go class.

The dogs in the class are so different, different experiences, different ages, different lifestyles. But they all have one thing in common, they work so hard together to reach their goals of being able to stay happy and calm around different people and dogs.
This week was a bigger challenge. Their routines had been changed due to the extreme high temperatures in the previous days and the evening before we'd had a thunderstorm. Yet they came and did great teamwork with their caregivers.

This week was the final 6th week of the puppy class.
It was great to see the puppies grow in confidence and skills over the 6 weeks.
On the final week they
*showed great impulse control around toys
* played with their owners
* recalled to their owners with distractions
*Loose lead walked with close distractions
*settled on their mat whilst I was a close distraction
Amazing team work, I'm looking forward to them calling in the pay as you go sessions in the future.

The next puppy course starts next Thursday 4th June, there is availability if you want to have great fun building skills with your puppy.

Week 6 of puppy class and look at the mat settles 🤩
The presence of the mat signals that it is time to settle and not be exploring.
We have been building up this association throughout the course, simpling starting with rewarding the puppies for investigating the mat.
Tonight, I was a distraction, walking around, and i even sat next to 2 of the puppies. Amazing to see the progress.

The puppies last week had a great session.
Whilst having fun playing, they practised impulse control, waiting for the cue to grab the toy.
Did great settles on the mat whilst the rest of the group did recalls.
The work their owners put in throughout the week has really started to shine.
