Want the summer look for your horse but with a bit more protection? Meet the A2 coarse blade.

Summer coats are changing, but the weather's still mild, so it's the perfect time for a coarse blade. They keep that natural summer look while leaving enough length for a bit of extra protection as the temperature drops. It must mean the end of summer with rain forecast for the next nine days🤦‍♀️ Time to dig out those rugs!

This can only mean one thing: autumn's giving us fair warning. As the temperature drops and the weather turns, it's worth thinking about what your horse will need to stay dry and comfortable.

We didn't expect one bottle of oil to make this much difference. ✂️

During a recent test of our sheep shears, one tester found the handpiece was heating up much faster than expected. It turned out they'd swapped the clipper oil supplied for engine oil.

We ran a quick sample test in the workshop to check. Blades coated in engine oil started generating heat almost straight away, and that heat travels up through the blades into the handpiece. The same clipper and blades using the supplied Masterclip clipper oil stayed cool throughout.

It comes down to viscosity: engine oil isn't always formulated to the right consistency to lubricate shearing blades properly, so friction builds and heat follows quickly. Clipper oil is made for this job: the right thickness to reduce friction and keep the blades and, importantly, the inner workings of the shearing head properly lubricated.

Not all engine oils are equal; a very fine, high-grade one might get away with it, but we still wouldn't recommend it, and using anything other than the supplied clipper oil will void your warranty.

If shearing gets tough going, our 5-in-1 Cool Care spray gives an extra cooling boost and helps disinfect blades between sheep.

Don't be tempted to reach for a substitute. Specialist clipper oil that's made for the job will make your shearing so much easier and protect the longevity of your shears and blades. Save this post for when you next need to shear or share with a farmer who's experienced this too.
