Nothing can truly prepare us for the day that we retire our horse.

That last ride, we never really know when it could be.

We push to reach those goals, competing, jumping, dressage or enjoying a leisurely hack, a gallop on the beach with our best friend…

Then one day they are not quite right, to and from the vets, ££ spent and emotions running high. Rehab, box rest, field rest, treatment… those dreaded words ‘time, rest, retirement’..

Maybe it’s age creeping up on them? Maybe it’s an old injury or a new one ?..

Sometimes we just see a little less sparkle in their eyes, those grey hairs that show us that their bodies are getting older.

The kindest thing we can do is know when it’s time to let our horses be horses, whether it’s for rest, recuperation or full retirement..

We are horse owners too, we have felt the emotions you feel, we too have best friends that we will one day have that one last ride on ❤️

Even though we are all enjoying summer, winter isn't far from our minds.. 🥶

So we thought we would share a little about what life is like for the horses at Padwick in the winter months.

🐴 If you have a hardy horse who needs to move around more, they can live out on the concrete hardstanding, complete with wind breaker, troughs of homegrown haylage, water drinkers and much less mud. But they are still able to have access to the winter field too.

🐴If you have a horse that requires a little more shelter either youngstock or an older horse, we have several barns which have a thick straw bed and a concrete area with troughs of homegrown haylage and water drinkers.

If you wanted to bring a horse to us for the winter and he/she needed to be in a barn, we suggest you bring your horse in advance, this enables them to make friends and mix in the summer field before they go in the barns together. We do not introduce new horses in to the barns in winter, its simply not fair on the horses.

We take horses on to the hardstanding throughout winter, its MASSIVE !! plus they have an entire field to mooch around in too!

If you want to chat through options, have a question or simply want to speak to us please call 07591458308 for more information

Self-Heal is a low-growing perennial herb found in meadows, woodlands, and grassy places throughout the UK and Isle of Man. It has square stems, opposite oval leaves, and small violet to purple flowers arranged in compact spikes. It belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is often considered a wild edible and medicinal herb with long traditional use.

It is resilient and creeping, thriving in disturbed ground and often overlooked, yet packed with healing properties.

Used for minor cuts, grazes, skin irritations
Internally as a lymphatic tonic or anti-inflammatory herb

The horses at Padwick are able to choose from lots of herbs and plants as these are freely available around the fields
