Paint my House

Paint my House Dogs, horses, houses, cats... I paint commissions for people who love the things in their world. My name is Richard Carman, and I am an artist.

I am based in the UK, and have been selling paintings and commissions for many years. I have been featured on UK TV many times, in my own series "A Brush With the Mersey", on BBC2's "Restoration", ITV's "Locks and Quays" and on Channel 4's "Watercolour Challenge". The first paintings I ever sold were of people's houses local to where I lived as a student, of local pubs, farm houses and businesses.

Since then I have painted all over the world, from Cape Town to Copenhagen, Barbados to Beirut. I post most of my stuff here, but if you like Instagram I'm at www.instagram.com/richard_carman_artist and if web sites are your thing you can do www.richardcarman.com

I painted Wilson in acrylic on canvas for my friend Kev. What a sensible, responsible and mature-looking chap he is. That's Wilson, not Kev.

Edit - apologies to Wilson, who I accidentally called Henry. No wonder he won't come back when I call him.

I started painting dogs in my teens - drawing my own dogs and doing them for friends and colleagues. I'm over 300 years old now, and I've drawn and painted a LOT of hairy best friends. But it all goes back to this one. This is Tinker. or "Tink" as she was affectionately known. We got her when I was about nine years old, and she was my best friend. We went to Abersoch in North Wales for weekend after weekend, Easter, Whitsun and half term holidays. It was the perfect place for a little boy and a dog to grow up together, when it was still a quiet little fishing village with no Range Rovers, no jetskis and no hoardes of Cestrians filling up the miles-long sandy beaches. We'd wake up in the morning and Tinker and I would head off into the sand hills with a football, finding stonechats and adders in the dunes, or crabs washed up on the beach. We'd climb the rocks at the curve of the bay or traipse to Llanbedrog Head to the east, and go home when we were hungry. All we lacked was Kirrin Island, but the islands in the bay served as potential Kirrins, though we never got out to them. Back at home we'd get up and go out Saturday morning bird-nesting and watching the birds come and go with binoculars, or I'd hook up with Paul and his sheltie, Brodie, and we'd wander the lanes. It was always sunny and warm and the hedges were alive with wildlife. A vulgar housing estate is built there now and most of the wildlife is gone. Tinker didn't live for very long - she went totally blind eventually and died very suddenly when I was seventeen. My dad buried her down the lane on the edge of a field of barley. The remains of my first best friend will be a metre down in somebody's garden these days. So if I have painted your dog, or you're thinking about whether you'd like me to, you can blame this little dog for why I do what I do, and why I love my subjects so much. I know what they mean to you because I look back on this little boy and his friend and know what she meant to me.

I've not been posting much lately. The weather has been poor, I've had a dose of COVID, and the snow kept me indoors. But I have been doing some drawing out and about. Here's some recent sketch book pages to get up to date...

Happy new year, and all the best for 2025 to everyone who has passed by this page in the last year. If you clicked on something to have a closer look, liked something, even if you actively disliked something but engaged with it anyway, thank you. I hope 2025 is a good, or at least a better year for you. ###

Wishing everyone who's clicked onto this page, liked a painting, left a comment, shared a post or (be still my beating heart) bought one of my paintings, a very happy Christmas, if Christmas is your thing. And if it's not, I wish you all the best anyway. Thank you all for your support over the last year - it means the world to me. I don't really have a Christmassy painting to share at this point, so let's go with my last painting of the year to date... A CHAFFINCH!!!
