Paint my House

Paint my House Dogs, horses, houses, cats... I paint commissions for people who love the things in their world. My name is Richard Carman, and I am an artist.

I am based in the UK, and have been selling paintings and commissions for many years. I have been featured on UK TV many times, in my own series "A Brush With the Mersey", on BBC2's "Restoration", ITV's "Locks and Quays" and on Channel 4's "Watercolour Challenge". The first paintings I ever sold were of people's houses local to where I lived as a student, of local pubs, farm houses and businesses.

Since then I have painted all over the world, from Cape Town to Copenhagen, Barbados to Beirut. I post most of my stuff here, but if you like Instagram I'm at www.instagram.com/richard_carman_artist and if web sites are your thing you can do www.richardcarman.com

After moving house three or four weeks ago my new studio is nowhere near ready to work in, and won't be for a while. But I became a grandfather, for the first time, to a little girl on Sunday, and spent the preceding week decorating her nursery, including this full-wall mural. My favourite is the zebra. I'm available if you would like something similar, or anything else as a mural. Imagine a life-size painting of your late doggy on the wall of the lounge, forever watching telly with you! I hope you like it

I've moved house this last week, so until the chaos settles down, when we've sorted the house out and I've set up my new studio (bigger, brighter, better!), I'm curtailing painting activities for the next handful of weeks so we can figure ourselves out. I'm obviously still accepting commissions, but won't be able to start on them until I'm ready to go again. In the meantime, here's Bruin from a few weeks ago, at this point part-finished.

I painted Bruin before Christmas, but he was embargoed while a reproduction took over a month to get to Finland (I could have driven it there in two days!). Of course he's a Lancashire heeler, the world's bravest animal, cow herder and rat catcher. Isn't he handsome?

Claude Monet died today in 1926. Some famous contemporary said of him that he was "just an eye. But WHAT an eye". I can't remember who. It always fascinated me as a teenager that he and my parents were alive at the same time; we tend to think of him as a C19th figure. He's a monster figure in the history of art. Bigger than any of his contemporaries by a huge margin. Nowadays he's not seen as quite so astonishingly radical as he was when he first appeared. But he was a monster.

This is Murry, an otterhound I painted a few years ago. Otterhounds are fabulous dogs. An owner posted on their FB page a few weeks ago the story of a dog who disappeared and was lost by it's owner. Over the next three days they had half the local population out searching for it, they left food out, left clothes and familiar rugs out for it, had a drone fly around looking for it, and they could not find the little Jack Russell that was missing anywhere. Another tragic lost dog story. Until someone suggested asking the otterhound owner (with apologies to her, I can't remember who it was) to bring her dog out for a sniff. It took the otterhound thirty minutes to track down and return the dog to its family. So - if you lose your dog somewhere, don't get a drone, get an otterhound!

I like drawing pencil portraits of people as well as painting them of dogs. If anyone would like to ask me, I work on them quickly and am happy to commit to having your picture ready to mail in good time for Christmas. Let me know in the comments or message me, and I'll get back without delay.

Now then, Rufus is eleven. I've known him since he was a puppy. His mum and dad were a jack russell and a dachshund. I think you can tell that's he's a really nice dog with a lovely temperament, always happy and engaged, and always willing to help. He stayed with us for a few days recently - he's welcome back any time.

I painted Sweep a couple of years ago. Does he look up for it, or what? As I often try and express, I do paint what your dog looks like, but what I really try and do is paint what goes on in their heads. Are they romantics, rascals or revolutionaries? I think we can work out what is going on in Sweep's head.

We all look forward to the first swallow, the first cuckoo, the first snowdrop, because they tell us spring is here and summer is on the horizon soon. At this time of year two species turn up that tell us autumn is here and winter will soon drop on us. I love autumn and winter - cold, short days and big warm fires. Fieldfare and redwing are here now, seen on a walk this week. This is my little fieldfare painting. I have a little stuffed redwing here in the lounge, so I might do a drawing of him too. Hope you like. 5x5" (approx), acrylic on paper.
