Multifidus muscle.

What is the Multifidus muscle?

Located on the horses back, The external muscle of the back is called the Longissimus dorsi which runs the entire length of the horseโ€™s back. This muscle shows on palpitation and when lifting the top line.

The Longissimus dorsi muscle often can be seen in spasm which is often down to fatigue, when the muscle has to support and stabilise the spine on their own.

The multifidus muscle is a deep spinal muscle that runs along the spine and plays a vital role in stabilising the spine. This muscle forms attachments between individual vertebrae. Each segment is shorter than the Longissimus Dorsi.

Weakness in this muscle can lead to back pain and lameness.

Massage can help reduce back pain and tension by increasing the circulation to the area.
Offering exercises such as pelvic tilts, in hand backing up, long reining can all help to strengthen the muscle.

When you strengthen this muscle you are helping the horse to

โญ๏ธ Improve posture and balance
โญ๏ธ Reduce the risk of further injury
โญ๏ธ Enhance performance

Maintenance massage for the lovely Ed ๐Ÿ˜ Ed complimented his massage today with a session on the balance pads.

Itโ€™s fascinating watching the muscles respond to the uneven surface.

Balance pads have a variety of benefits including

โญ๏ธ improving core strength
โญ๏ธ helping proprioception and body awareness
โญ๏ธ co-ordination
โญ๏ธ post injury rehabilitation to activate muscles and build strength

When you stand on balance pads you are encouraging the horse to engage there core muscles and isometric muscle contractions to balance.
As part of maintenance routine this can help to strengthen the multifidus muscle which stabilises the spine.

A stronger core and spine will therefore enable the horse to have a better posture, joint stability and body awareness.
This helps to improve horses performance especially in the following disciplines of showjumping and dressage. Horses will become more responsive to rider aids and be able to perform moves easier.

If you would like to book your horse in please message me.

Are you restricting grazing and/or do you have a horse with EMS/prone to laminitis?

Read on!

Obesity is a huge problem in horses and can lead to insulin resistance, joint problems, hoof pain and in severe cases can even be fatal.

Restricting grazing and general calorie intake relative to work load is absolutely necessary to prevent excessive weight gain but it can come at a cost.

Horses evolved to roam miles each day over varying terrain, eating up to 40 different plant species. Restricting grazing and overall forage intake can impact negatively on the gut by reducing the variety of prebiotic plant fibres eaten.

๐™’๐™๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™–๐™ง๐™š ๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™š๐™—๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™˜๐™จ?
Prebiotics are a food source for the beneficial bacteria in the gut, encouraging their growth and activity. They are fermented by gut bacteria, producing short-chain fatty acids that help maintain a healthy gut lining and support a balanced microbiome. They have also been linked to blood sugar control, aiding immune function and overall well-being.

Ensuring your horse receives all the necessary daily minerals and vitamins they require is vitally important when restricting forage intake. Use a quality, low calorie balancer and top with Equell Gut Food.

Containing 12 different types of prebiotic fibres and a wide variety of natural antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, Gut Food feeds the good bacteria in your horseโ€™s gut and includes ingredients that support against insulin resistance.

Not only is Gut Food extremely good for your horse (and suitable for all types, including those prone to laminitis) but it is extremely palatable! Horseโ€™s love the taste of our special blend which includes plants, herbs and berries to tempt even the fussiest of feeders.

Get your bag today and let your horse start feeling the benefits of our wonderful Gut Food ๐Ÿฅฐ because Gut Health Shines ๐Ÿคฉ
