Intervertebral disc extrusion is a common reason for hindquarter weakness or paralysis and typically occurs in dogs such as Dachshunds, although any dog breed (and the occasional cat) can be affected. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

With our in-house Siemans * Computed Tomography (CT) machine, Highland Vet Referrals are able to diagnose and treat many cases of disc extrusion. CT is a reliable imaging tool for diagnosing disc extrusions in most affected pets. A CT study can generally be performed under sedation and takes a few minutes to complete.

Most cases that require surgery need to stay in hospital for a few days afterwards, we are able to offer excellent twenty four hour care with the help of Highland Vet Emergencies who are on site at our premises after hours and on weekends!๐Ÿฉบ

โœจThis is the beautiful Bella with our nurse Claire โœจ

This sweet girl has been through so much in such a short time, Bella first broke her front right leg in November 2022 at just 7months old, which we repaired here at HVR using plates and screws. The next 10 months went great at home until she broke the same leg, in a different place. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Due to just the worst bad luck ever, poor Bella has broken her leg a total of 3 times in the last year. But, she has been so brave and is always smiling and tail wagging when she comes to see us.
Yesterday her mum brought her in with her cute wee jumper and fresh haircut to pay us a visit!๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ

๐ŸŒŸMeet Titan,๐ŸŒŸ

This fantastic boy is a 3yr old Maine C**n, who was in with us yesterday for a Ventral Bullar Osteotomy.๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿฑ

Titan has had trouble with his right ear for some time, it was red, itchy and smelly and didn't seem to get any better with cleaning or ear drops.

He first came to us a few weeks ago for a CT scan of his head, so we could get a better image of what was causing him pain. He had polyps removed from his ear previously, but it appeared that they had regrown and was the reason for his discomfort. ๐Ÿ˜ข

The Ventral Bullar Osteotomy surgery involves making a small opening in the neck to gain access to the "bulla" and removing the bottom of the bony canal along with all infected material (polyps in Titans case) in the middle ear.

The "bulla" is the middle ear cavity. When this cavity becomes severely infected, or when a foreign item, polyp, or tumor is located in it, it can become incredibly painful for cats and dogs alike.

Titans surgery and recovery went well, and he received lots and lots of love from all of our team. โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ
This is him with our Nurse Jenny, giving him a proper bosie! ๐Ÿฅฐ
