How to Build a Stronger Bond With Your Dog Through Better Communication

A well‑behaved dog isn’t just trained - it’s understood. Many of the behaviour challenges I see across Scotland stem from miscommunication between dog and owner. Strengthening your bond starts with learning to “speak dog,” and the results can be life‑changing.

Listen Before You Lead

Dogs communicate constantly through body language. A tucked tail, lip‑licking, or turning away can signal stress long before a growl appears. When you respond early, you prevent escalation and build trust.

Train in Short, Focused Sessions

Dogs learn best in bite‑sized chunks. Five minutes of focused training beats a long, unfocused session. Rewarding Dogs’ tailored programmes emphasise clear, achievable steps that build success quickly.

Make Training Part of Daily Life

Loose‑lead walking, recall, and calm greetings aren’t taught in a single session - they’re reinforced in everyday moments. Reward small wins: a glance back at you, a calm pause, or choosing not to bark.

Create a Safe Learning Environment

If your dog is anxious, overwhelmed, or overstimulated, learning shuts down. Many “problem behaviours” improve simply by adjusting your approach to your dog as well as modifying the environment - distance from triggers, quieter spaces, or giving direction in a way your dog understands. This is especially important for reactive or rescue dogs, which Rewarding Dogs specialises in helping.

Work With Your Dog, Not Against Them

Every dog is an individual. What motivates one may not motivate another. A personalised behaviour plan - built around your dog’s temperament, history, and needs - creates faster more lasting results. This personalised approach is central to our behaviour consultations.

When you communicate clearly and compassionately, your dog becomes more confident, cooperative, and connected to you. A stronger bond isn’t just the key to better behaviour - it’s the foundation of a happier life together.

We can help with that! 🐾

🦮 Thinking about getting a dog? Here’s the reality about breed choice:

We’re asked this a lot, and the truth might surprise you: There are HUGE variations within any breed!

Two Border Collies can have completely different temperaments. The same goes for any breed out there.

That said, here’s what matters:

If you’re looking at high-energy working breeds like Border Collies or Springer Spaniels, understand what you’re signing up for:

– Active owners required

– Mental stimulation needed (not just physical exercise)

– Minimum 2 hours walking per day

– These dogs need a job to do

The real question isn’t “what’s the best breed?” – it’s “what breed matches MY lifestyle?”

Rescue dogs? Senior dogs? Mixed breeds? All can make wonderful family pets with the right match!

🐶 Wondering what toys will actually keep your dog entertained?
The answer might surprise you: it depends on your dog!

But we’ve found that most dogs absolutely love:
✓ Stuffed Kongs, especially frozen ones*, recipe below – Long-lasting mental stimulation, especially great for anxious dogs
✓ Food dispensing activity toys – These combine play with problem-solving

The key is finding what your dog enjoys. Every dog has different preferences – some love fetching, others chasing, and many love a game of tug. Some prefer puzzle-solving, some fetch and some just love to destroy things! Whatever it is, your play should be interactive with your dog to cement your bond and increase your dog’s cooperation with you.

Pro tip: Rotate your dog’s toys regularly to keep things fresh and exciting. And remember – the best toy is often the one that holds your dog’s attention, enriches their day, and involves you!

* Frozen Kongs
– firmly block up the hole at the base with a treat
– smear inside Kong with meat paste cheese spread or similar
– fill with kibble and perhaps some small meaty treats
– place Kong upright in a cup filled to the top with water
– put in freezer overnight

🚶 Is your puppy a furry little tractor on walks?
We hear this one all the time: “My puppy keeps pulling when we’re out walking – help!”

The good news? This is one of the easiest behaviours to fix, and it starts with a simple technique.

Stop Your Puppy From Pulling on the Lead 🐕🐾

Here’s the trick:
✓ When your puppy pulls, stop and turn around in the opposite direction
✓ As soon as they catch up and walk beside you, give PLENTY of treats and praise
✓ Repeat consistently

This teaches your puppy that staying close to you (rather than pulling ahead) is the best reward. Young puppies learn this quickly with patience and positive reinforcement!

The result? Enjoyable walks for both of you! 🎉

🎵 Do dog whistles really work?

Short answer: YES! But with a catch.

Dog whistles are absolutely effective if you teach your dog to respond to them. The whistle itself isn’t magic – it’s all about the training!

Here’s what matters:
✓ Consistency in your training
✓ Positive association (rewards when they respond)
✓ Patience while building the habit
✓ Practice in different environments

Many owners think the whistle does the work, but really, you’re doing the training. The whistle is just a clear, consistent signal that your dog learns to understand.

With proper training, dog whistles become incredibly useful tools – especially for recall in open spaces!

📺 Should you leave the TV or radio on when you pop out?
Great question – and yes, it absolutely doesn’t hurt!
Leaving some background noise while you’re gone can actually be helpful for some dogs.
It:
✓ Masks outside sounds that might trigger anxiety
✓ Provides a familiar, soothing soundscape
✓ Creates routine and comfort
Our recommendation?
Try Classic FM – it’s calming for both humans and dogs! 🎶
That said, background noise isn’t a cure-all for separation anxiety. If your dog struggles when you leave, that requires proper training and behaviour management. But as part of a routine? It’s a lovely touch.

⚠️ This common dog walking mistake can have tragic consequences

Livestock worrying can leave animals severely injured, traumatised, or even dead - and it’s entirely preventable.

As we enter lambing season, the risk is at its highest. Even the most well-behaved dogs can instinctively chase sheep if not kept under control.

🐑 Sheep can miscarry or die from stress alone
🐕 Dogs don’t need to make contact to cause harm
⚠️ Fleeing animals can suffer fatal injuries

This doesn’t just impact animals, it has a devastating emotional and financial toll on farmers too.

Keep your dog on a lead and under close control around livestock.

A dog owner commits a criminal offence where their dog worries livestock on any agricultural land and breaking the law could lead to:
• A £40,000 fine
• Up to 12 months in prison
• Your dog being seized

Enjoy the countryside but do it responsibly this lambing season 💜

The Postman Problem – Why Dogs Bite and How to Fix It

📬 Does your dog go crazy when the postman arrives?

It’s one of the most common calls we get – and we completely understand! But have you ever wondered why your dog reacts this way?

Here’s the truth:
The postman comes to the door, “interferes” with the property, and is never invited in. From your dog’s perspective, it’s suspicious behaviour worth defending against!

The solution?
Change the association!
Instead of the postman being a threat, you can teach your dog that their arrival means something positive is about to happen.

The key is consistency and positive experiences. With the right approach, you can transform your dog’s reaction from defensive to calm – sometimes in just a few sessions!

🐶 Is your puppy ready for training class?
Here’s what you need to know!
Many owners ask us:
“When is the right time to bring my pup to training classes?”
The great news?
As soon as they’ve completed their course of inoculations, they can begin!

There’s no upper age limit either – whether you have an 8-week-old pup or an adult dog, it’s never too late to learn good habits.

Starting early gives your puppy the best foundation for a happy, well-behaved life. They’ll learn to socialise safely, build confidence, and understand what you’re asking of them.
