🤠 Horse trailer awareness post ❤️
A little reminder about the “grey area” when it comes to towing 🫣
It’s come to my attention that a lot of lovely horse owners aren’t fully aware of vehicle towing limits and legal capacities. During my emergency loading and loading sessions, I often mention when a car or SUV isn’t actually legal or safe to tow a horse trailer — and I sometimes get the response, “Yes it is!”
Just because a vehicle can physically pull a trailer, especially with a bigger engine, doesn’t mean it’s safe or legal. Towing isn’t only about pulling power — it’s also about braking ability, stability, weight limits, and overall towing capacity.
A lot of large SUVs that look capable of towing horses actually aren’t suitable once you check the legal weights and limits.
Since the towing licence rules changed, trailers have become more accessible, but it’s so important to make sure your vehicle is genuinely equipped and rated to tow safely. Sometimes that means upgrading your vehicle too.
It’s becoming an increasing problem, and many owners genuinely don’t realise they may be overweight or towing illegally until it’s pointed out to them.
We all love our horses and want them — and ourselves — to travel safely ❤️
I’ve even cancelled travelling training sessions in the past because the setup wasn’t legal to tow. Safety always comes first.
