Join us outside the gates of MBR Acres, PE28 2DT. This factory puppy farm breeds up to 2000 beagle puppies every year. At 20 weeks old they are sold to contract testing laboratories across the UK for toxicology testing. They are treated as a product. We know that they are living, breathing, sentient beings that feel pain and loss. The camp page is here to give you daily updates and information, live streams, and camp call outs. Our primary objectives are to free the beagle dogs bred at MBR Acres Ltd and to ban animal testing in the UK. Our strategy consists of a public awareness campaign, lawful pressure tactics, industry exposure and to challenge the current law with scientific and ethical arguments and process.

🚨 £10.2 MILLION OF TAXPAYERS’ MONEY GRANTED TO RESEARCH INVOLVING DOGS AND MONKEYS IN 2025.

Yesterday, we exposed how UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) awarded £355.3 million in funding associated with research involving animals. This figure includes £95 million in 25/26 granted to MRC institutes, units and centres.

TODAY, WE FOLLOW THE MONEY FURTHER.

Our Freedom of Information investigation reveals how in 2025 two UKRI research councils granted funds for research involving dogs and monkeys of:

DOGS — £3.4 MILLION
MONKEYS — £6.8 MILLION

THESE FIGURES COME FROM JUST ONE PUBLIC BODY THE UKRI.

But there is more:

THE MEDICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL RUNS AND FUNDS A MONKEY BREEDING CENTRE at Porton Down in Wiltshire.

The Centre for Macaques breeds and supplies rhesus monkeys for research within the UK academic sector, and it houses approximately 250 monkeys.
UKRI records reveal a £7,697,000 core funding award for the centre covering 2024–2029.

This raises further questions about the public money supporting animal research and breeding facilities.

Obtaining this information was no easy task. UKRI initially withheld information relating to dogs under a health and safety exemption. After a three-year appeal battle and a victory at the First-tier Tribunal, we were finally able to expose public expenditure on animal testing.

THE PUBLIC HAS A RIGHT TO KNOW HOW ITS MONEY IS BEING USED.

The Government has pledged to phase out animal testing, yet millions continue to be directed towards animal research including that with dogs and monkeys.

£260.3 MILLION OF TAX PAYERS MONEY GRANTED TO RESEARCH INVOLVING ANIMALS IN 2025.

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is a publicly funded organisation comprising nine councils and bodies that can grant funding for research.

Our FOI also revealed that the MRc also grants funds to its own institutes, units and centres. The amounts are staggering: £95 million spent in 2023/24, £99.1 million in 2024/25 and another £95 million in 2025/26. That’s £289.1 million over just three financial years.

For 2025 when added to the headline £260.3 million figure taxpayers money is funding in total a staggering £355.3 million to research involving animals. Your money - is this what you want it spent on?

These figures only form part of the picture as they cover UKRI alone. Other public bodies may also fund research involving animals.

Getting this information was a battle. UKRI initially withheld dog specific information under the health and safety exemption. Following a victory at the First-tier Tribunal, we continued pressing for answers until we obtained full disclosure.

FOLLOW THE MONEY.

While hundreds of millions are awarded to research involving animals, the National Centre for the 3Rs (NC3Rs) receives on average just £9.5 million annually to support Replacement, Reduction and Refinement. Only part of that funding, likely about one third, goes towards actual replacement of animals in research and that includes replacing one species with another.

The Government has pledged to phase out animal testing, yet the funding tells a very different story. £260.3M awarded to research involving animals by just ONE public body in 2025, compared with the £60M allocated to the phase out strategy. The imbalance is shocking and deeply disappointing.

How can the Government expect its strategy to become reality when the funding committed to phasing out cruel and outdated animal testing is a mere fraction of the sums awarded to research that continues to use animals?

Without a fundamental shift in funding priorities, the government strategy appears to be nothing more than a public relations exercise rather than a credible plan for change.
